UFC 246: Holly Holm vs. Raquel Pennington live play-by-play, results 1

The Body Lock brings you play-by-play updates and live results from Holly Holm vs. Raquel Pennington at UFC 246 in Las Vegas.

Holm (12-5) enters UFC 246 after a failed title challenge against Amanda Nunes in July last year. She has traded wins and losses in all of her last five fights.

Pennington (10-7) picked up her first victory since November 2016 when she defeated Irene Aldana by split decision in July last year.

Holly Holm vs. Raquel Pennington play-by-play

Round one

Pennington low kick misses. Holm takes the center of the Octagon. Pennington feinting to try and close the distance. Pennington connects with a right hand on the back of a 1-2 combination. Holm patient start as she tries to create safe openings. Pennington charges and lands a fairly insignificant right hand.

Holm now has Pennington against the cage with one underhook. Holm has her head pushed into Pennington’s chin and she has continued to work the legs and body of Pennington with strikes. Holm now has double underhooks and attempts to turn Pennington. Pennington framing very well and keeps a strong position. Holm has been excellent in the clinch. Pennington breaks free and attempts a takedown. Runs into a guillotine attempt as the round ends.

Good round for Holm (10-9).

Round two

Pennington more aggressive to start round two. She comes forward recklessly and Holm circles away behind a jab. Holm leads with a body jab before closing the distance and entering the clinch. Holm in control of the fight against the cage again. She’s wearing down Pennington with minutes of control. As Pennington attempts to switch, Holm responds by immediately switching back.

Not a lot of striking from Holm in the clinch, but she’s disallowing Pennington to land any power shots. Pennington lands some solid knees to the stomach of Holm and they separate. Pennington has an opportunity to land some strikes here, but Holm closes the distance and muscles Pennington back to the cage again. Hard knee to the body lands for Holm. Pennington creates separation by landing a knee to the body at the end of round two.

Another round for Holm. Not much impact (or damage), but she’s easily controlling Pennington and dominating the majority of the action.

Round three

Pennington lands a nice 1-2 early in round three. Holm circling and trying to enter the clinch again. Pennington doing a better job of evading the clinch position this round. Low kick connects for Holm. Pennington’s advances are sloppy, Holm doing a good job of responding with a jab and moving to the side. Pennington clearly needs more feints and to attack from different angles but can’t track Holm.

Holm controlling the distance with kicks. Pennington comes forward and lands a punch. Holm slips and then returns to her feet but has her back against the cage. Holm turns Pennington and we are back to the position that Holm has dominated for the entire fight. Knees from Pennington are landing but Holm controlling. Holm comes forward with a forward blitz and connects with some punches. Pennington lands some hard shots to finish the round.

Another round for Holm but there’s not that much in it. Holm didn’t have much impact, again, but controlled the round fairly easily.
