Although Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou didn’t provide the earth-shattering knockout that we all hoped to witness, January 2018 was still loaded with memorable finishes.
#5 – Islam Makhachev’s lethal left hand
— UFC (@ufc) January 21, 2018
Makhachev brought out the first of Joe Rogan’s classic ‘wooow’ calls for 2018 when he crashed a left hand into Gleison Tibau’s head in the first bout of UFC 220.
The punch had similar velocity to that of Abdul Razak Alhassan’s knockout but the punch didn’t land as cleanly as it could have. In saying that, don’t even try to imagine the outcome if this punch landed on the button.
#4 – Mirsad Bektic’s sternum smasher
“I TOLD YOU!”
— FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) January 28, 2018
Mirsad Bektic gladdened an otherwise quiet crowd at UFC on FOX 27 when he ripped a right hand deep into the sternum of Godofredo Pepey just 2:47 into the first round.
Bektic’s intentions were clear from the opening seconds of the bout as he continually walked his opponent back toward the cage. When Pepey finally stepped far enough behind the UFC Octagon’s black perimeter, Bektic carefully moved forward before launching a devastating right hand.
This incredible knockout was not just one of the best moments at UFC on FOX 27 in Charlotte, but also in January 2018.
#3 – Edward Kelly’s 21-second finish
— ONE Championship (@ONEChampionship) January 26, 2018
Edward “The Ferocious” Kelly lived up to his moniker with an outstanding knockout of Meas Meul at ONE: Global Superheroes.
Kelly connected with a superb three-punch combination that lifted Meul up in the air before flattening him out on the canvas. For his efforts, Kelly was awarded the “GoDaddy Knockout of the Night” award and is absolutely deserving of his spot here in these rankings.
#2 – Aaron Pico’s liver crusher
While Abdul Razak Alhassan’s knockout might have been the most destructive, there is no doubt that Aaron Pico’s liver shot against Shane Kruchten would have been the most painful.
The 21-year-old targeted the body of his taller opponent before precisely connecting with a crushing left hand that folded Kruchten up on the mat. The knockout also marks consecutive memorable knockouts from the young Bellator martial artist.
#1 – Abdul Razak Alhassan’s vicious uppercut
— FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) January 21, 2018
Everything about Abdul Razak Alhassan’s knockout at UFC 220 was perfect.
After a ‘controversial’ ending to the fight with Sabah Homasi at UFC 218, Alhassan was booked to face him again at UFC 220 to settle the differences. This time, however, Alhassan put a giant exclamation mark on his victory.
Alhassan dipped his legs and brought his hand all the way down to his waist before shooting it upward at Homasi’s chin. The result was a violent finishing blow that nearly took the head off Homasi’s shoulders.
