Ronda Rousey returned to mixed martial arts after nearly a decade away and defeated Gina Carano in just 17 seconds on Saturday night. The 39-year-old former UFC champion finished the fight with her signature armbar submission.
Rousey charged across the cage immediately after the opening bell and tackled Carano to the mat. She quickly moved to mount position and locked in the armbar that forced Carano to tap out.
The victory improved Rousey’s career record to 13-2. She last competed in MMA in December 2016, ending a nine-and-a-half year absence from the sport.

Two Legends Return After Long Layoffs
Carano, 44, hadn’t fought in 17 years before stepping into the cage on Saturday. The fight brought together two of the most important figures in women’s MMA history.
Rousey became interested in MMA because of Carano, who headlined television events in the late 2000s when the sport was still fighting for mainstream acceptance. Carano’s athleticism and star power helped legitimize women’s fighting during that era.
Rousey later became one of the world’s most famous athletes as the first women’s champion in the UFC. The promotion only began featuring women’s fights because of Rousey’s undeniable talent and drawing power.
Rousey famously won eight fights in less than a minute during her rise through MMA in the 2010s. When asked if she considered waiting longer to finish a fight so many years in the making, Rousey laughed.
“Hell no,” she said. “My husband and my kids are watching me. I don’t want to put them through anything more than I have to.”
Respect Between Fighters After Quick Finish
Despite the swift ending, both fighters showed respect for each other after the bout. Rousey and Carano hugged and shared warm words following the stoppage.
“I really didn’t want to hurt her,” Rousey said. “Luckily it was just beautiful martial arts, that’s what it is.”
Carano smiled even after the quick loss, which marked one of the longest layoffs in professional sports history. She said she felt prepared despite the 17-year absence.
“I felt so ready,” Carano said. “I’ve never felt that good. But I haven’t been here for 17 years … and I wanted to hit her.”
Carano said she used her fight preparations as a way to overcome multiple health problems from recent years. She has not announced whether she plans to fight again.
Rousey has repeatedly stated this will be her final fight. She retired from MMA in 2016 after back-to-back knockout losses and later pursued a career in professional wrestling.
The fight was available to watch globally on Netflix. The event also featured Francis Ngannou, who finished Philipe Lins in the first round of his second MMA fight in four years.
Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion, teased potential future matchups with boxer Jake Paul or MMA star Jon Jones, who attended the show.
