Vitor Petrino used a mix of leg kicks and takedowns to earn a unanimous decision victory over Serghei Spivac in the co-main event of UFC Sacramento on Saturday night. All three judges scored the heavyweight bout 30-27 in favor of Petrino.

The Brazilian fighter improved his record to 14-2 and extended his winning streak to four consecutive victories. Spivac dropped to 18-7 following the loss.

Petrino came out firing calf kicks in the opening round, forcing Spivac to stay cautious early. The Russian fighter struggled to find his rhythm as Petrino continued attacking the legs while mixing in jabs and body kicks.

Both heavyweights showed patience in the first five minutes, drawing audible frustration from the Sacramento crowd. Spivac eventually opened up offensively once he got comfortable with Petrino’s power, but neither fighter landed anything major in the opening frame.

Petrino Takes Control in Second Round

The second round saw Petrino change his approach dramatically. After landing more leg kicks, he shot in for a takedown that Spivac initially defended.

Petrino stayed persistent and dragged Spivac to the canvas on his second attempt. Once on top, Petrino worked methodically, landing punches and elbows while Spivac tried to defend from his back.

The Brazilian eventually moved to full mount and continued landing shots. Spivac gave up his back trying to escape, but Petrino couldn’t finish a rear-naked choke attempt.

Spivac managed to return to his feet late in the round and even landed some punches. He smiled as the horn sounded, showing confidence despite spending most of the round defending on the ground.

Final Round Sees Spivac’s Late Push Fall Short

Before the third round began, Spivac’s corner urged him to fight “for your father,” trying to inspire a comeback. Spivac responded immediately, coming out aggressive and landing some of his heaviest shots of the fight.

The sudden pressure forced Petrino to shoot for another takedown. He successfully put Spivac on his hands and knees, then dragged him back to the canvas.

Spivac worked back to his feet but Petrino took him down again quickly. With roughly two minutes remaining, Spivac needed to find something special to change the outcome.

Petrino stayed smart and technical, controlling position and avoiding any major risks. Spivac appeared to injure his ankle in the final 10 seconds, adding to his frustration.

The fight went to the judges with the outcome clear. Petrino had controlled two of the three rounds with his grappling and done enough damage to secure the victory.

Petrino entered the fight on a three-fight winning streak, with his most recent victory coming against Steven Asplund in March. He had scored back-to-back stoppage wins over Austen Lane and Thomas Petersen before the decision over Asplund.

Spivac was coming off a unanimous decision victory over Ante Delija at UFC Houston in February. That win had snapped a two-fight losing streak for the fighter known as the “Polar Bear,” who had previously lost to Waldo Cortes-Acosta and Jailton Almeida.

The unanimous decision victory marked Petrino’s fourth straight win in the UFC heavyweight division. All three judges scored the bout 30-27 in his favor.
