Godinez entered the octagon looking to bounce back from a loss to Tatiana Suarez. Souza came in riding a two-fight winning streak but without a ranking in the division.
Early Rounds Feature Striking Battle
The first round saw Godinez land first with an outside leg kick and press forward behind her jab. Souza moved on the outside with her hands low, showing little respect for Godinez’s power.
Godinez’s nose began bleeding early as both fighters stayed active on their feet. Souza appeared to have a clear power advantage, simply absorbing the punches that Godinez landed.
The Canadian fighter attempted multiple takedowns in the opening round but couldn’t secure them. Godinez did briefly dump Souza near the end of the round, but the Brazilian scrambled back to her feet immediately.
The second round saw Souza come out more aggressive and find her range. Her uppercuts began landing late in the frame as she pressured Godinez against the fence.
Godinez responded with flurries and leg kicks but was unable to complete any takedown attempts. The high pace continued through both of the first two rounds.
Final Round Decides the Fight
Heading into the third round, the fight appeared close on the scorecards. Godinez needed a strong finish after what seemed like a losing second round.
Just over a minute into the final frame, Godinez finally secured a successful takedown with three minutes remaining. She immediately went to work from inside Souza’s closed guard.
From top position, Godinez delivered punches to the body and head while Souza held on from the bottom. The Brazilian did not attempt to get back to her feet or create much offense.
Godinez maintained control for most of the round, peppering Souza with punches and elbows. Despite appearing low on gas, she kept working from top position.
Souza managed to kick Godinez off in the closing seconds and got back to her feet. However, the damage was done, with Godinez clearly winning the third round.
The judges awarded the first round to Godinez along with the third, giving her the unanimous decision victory. The scorecards read 29-28, 29-28, and 29-28.
