Vinicius Oliveira earned a second-round TKO victory over Andre Fili at UFC Vegas 119 on Saturday night, but the finish has sparked debate about whether illegal strikes played a role. The fight took place at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas and marked Oliveira’s first bout at featherweight.

Oliveira (23-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC) nearly saw his debut go wrong in the opening round. Fili (25-14 MMA, 13-13 UFC) landed hard punches and kicks to the body that visibly hurt the Brazilian fighter and had him in serious trouble.

The 135-pound fighter survived the early storm and came back strong in round two. Oliveira began targeting Fili’s legs with calf kicks while mixing in sharp jabs and body shots that slowed down the veteran.

    The Finish and the Controversy

With seconds remaining in the second round, Oliveira trapped Fili against the cage and unleashed a barrage of strikes. He dropped Fili with an uppercut before following up with more punches and elbows on the ground.

The referee stopped the fight at 4:56 of round two. However, video replay showed that some of Oliveira’s final elbows may have landed on the back of Fili’s head, which is illegal under UFC rules.

Fili was bleeding from the back of his head after the fight ended. Some observers questioned whether the referee should have stopped the action to address potential fouls instead of letting the finish stand.

Oliveira entered the fight as a heavy betting favorite despite Fili’s experience. The Brazilian had built hype with a strong start at bantamweight before losing to Mario Bautista in his first UFC main event.

    Weight Class Change Pays Off

That loss prompted Oliveira to move up to 145 pounds. In his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier, he explained why the change was necessary for his career.

“I’m feeling better in this division,” Oliveira said. “I had to lose too much to fight. All my fights in UFC, I felt tired and weak.”

The fighter said he can now compete at his full potential without the drain of extreme weight cuts. “Now I can show the world how good I am,” he told Cormier. “Now I just wait for the next opponent.”

Oliveira had not scored a finish in over two years before Saturday night. The win snaps a difficult stretch and gives him momentum in his new weight class.

Fili drops to 13-13 in the UFC and 25-14 overall in his career. The 35-year-old has now lost two straight fights after falling to Timmy Cuamba in his previous bout.

UFC Vegas 119 took place at the promotion’s Apex facility with the main card streaming on Paramount Plus. The event featured several other finishes including submission wins and knockout victories on the preliminary card.
