Shamil Gaziev ended his two-fight losing streak in spectacular fashion Saturday night, knocking out Kennedy Nzechukwu with a single punch at UFC Sacramento. The heavyweight bout at Golden 1 Center lasted just 1 minute and 20 seconds.
Nzechukwu came out moving quickly around the octagon, but he kept his hands down by his waist instead of protecting his face. The Nigerian fighter appeared to rely on his speed advantage, as he weighed in at 244 pounds compared to Gaziev’s 261 pounds.
The unusual defensive strategy backfired almost immediately. Gaziev landed one or two light touches early before finding his timing against the circling Nzechukwu.
The Knockout Punch
As Nzechukwu moved along the fence, Gaziev stepped forward with a lunging right hand. The punch landed perfectly on Nzechukwu’s chin, sending him crashing to the canvas unconscious.

The referee immediately stepped between the fighters, preventing Gaziev from landing any follow-up strikes. Nzechukwu took no additional damage after hitting the mat.
Commentator Michael Bisping had called Nzechukwu’s low-hand position a “dangerous game to play” just moments before the knockout landed. The timing of the comment matched perfectly with the finishing sequence.
Breaking the Losing Streak
The victory marked Gaziev’s first win since February 2025. The Russian heavyweight had dropped back-to-back fights to Waldo Cortes-Acosta and Brando Peričić before Saturday’s performance.
Gaziev now has 10 career knockouts to his name. After the fight, he stated he wanted to compete again later in 2026 following some time off to recover.
