King Green scored an upset victory over Daniel Zellhuber at UFC Fight Night 268 on Saturday night at Arena CDMX in Mexico City. The 39-year-old veteran stopped Zellhuber with a second-round TKO at the 4:55 mark of the round.
Green entered the lightweight bout as a sizeable betting underdog against the hometown fighter. Despite the odds, he controlled the fight from the opening bell with confident striking and quick movement.
Green Dominates From the Start
The veteran fighter used his jab effectively throughout the contest and mixed in well-timed kicks and punches. Zellhuber struggled to find his rhythm and failed to surpass 20 total strikes until late in the second round.
Green spent much of the fight taunting his opponent while slipping strikes with ease. Zellhuber stood directly in front of Green with his hands down but couldn’t generate enough offense to threaten the veteran.
The Mexican fighter is known for his long reach and clean striking. However, Green was able to avoid almost all of Zellhuber’s attacks throughout the bout.
Late Second-Round Finish
Green landed a counter right hand during an exchange with little time remaining in the second round. He followed up with another straight right and a left hook that left Zellhuber visibly disoriented.
Zellhuber stumbled backwards into the cage as Green rushed forward with heavy punches. Green continued his attack with ground-and-pound strikes until referee Herb Dean stepped in to stop the fight.
The victory improved Green’s UFC record to 15-12-1 across 29 appearances with the promotion. His overall mixed martial arts record now stands at 34-17-1.
Zellhuber dropped to 15-4 in his professional career and 3-4 inside the UFC octagon. The loss came in front of his home crowd in Mexico City.
Green proved he still possesses the speed to compete with fighters outside the top 15 rankings. He added to his existing record for most strikes landed in UFC history.
After the fight, Green chose not to call out a specific opponent during his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. Instead, he made a request to UFC President Dana White.
“Dana, bring my boy Nate Diaz back to the UFC,” Green said. “Let him retire where he belongs.”
