Topuria’s corner threw in the towel between the fourth and fifth rounds after the 29-year-old fighter sustained severe facial damage. The stoppage ended Topuria’s perfect 17-0 record and gave the 37-year-old Gaethje his first UFC championship.
Gaethje entered the fight as a heavy underdog at +400 odds compared to Topuria’s -550 favorite status. Most analysts predicted Topuria would win based on his superior boxing technique and recent knockout victories over Charles Oliveira, Max Holloway, and Alexander Volkanovski.
The Fight Breakdown
Topuria had not fought since June 2025 when he knocked out Charles Oliveira in the first round. He held both the featherweight and lightweight titles before Sunday’s loss.

The fight statistics showed Gaethje typically absorbs 7.05 strikes per minute with only 51 percent striking defense. Topuria was considered one of the best boxers in the sport with much better defensive numbers at 64 percent.
Despite the statistical disadvantages, Gaethje landed repeated damaging blows throughout the four rounds. Observers noted Topuria’s face became increasingly swollen and damaged as the fight progressed.

White said he believes Topuria suffered a broken orbital bone based on the appearance of his eye. “I’m not a doctor, but his eye looked like he probably has a broken orbital,” he stated.
The UFC president said Topuria needs time to recover before returning to competition. “My plans for him are to go home and rest and recover and take his time. Tonight was a rough night for him,” White said.
The event featured seven total matchups including two title fights. The co-main event showcased Ciryl Gane versus Alex Pereira for the interim heavyweight championship.
Both fighters entered that bout as even favorites at -110 odds. Pereira attempted to become a three-division champion by moving up to heavyweight for the first time.
