Christian Rodriguez snapped his two-fight losing streak with a brutal first-round finish of Hyder Amil at UFC Fight Night 279 on Saturday in Las Vegas. The featherweight bout ended at the 3:43 mark of Round 1 when Rodriguez put Amil to sleep with a guillotine choke.
Rodriguez looked sharp from the opening bell at the Meta APEX. He landed a vicious right head kick that dropped Amil to the canvas and nearly ended the fight.
Instead of going for ground strikes, Rodriguez quickly grabbed hold of Amil’s neck. He locked in a tight guillotine choke that rendered Amil unconscious for the technical submission victory.
Must-Win Situation for Both Fighters
Both Rodriguez and Amil entered the fight with their backs against the wall. Each man had lost his previous two fights and needed a win to avoid dropping three straight in the UFC.
Rodriguez improved his record to 13-4 overall and 6-4 in the UFC. Amil fell to 11-3 overall and 3-3 inside the octagon.

The victory was arguably Rodriguez’s best finish in his UFC career. The quick and devastating performance showed his complete skill set with both striking and grappling.
“Especially getting a finish in the UFC, man, this is the highest level,” Rodriguez said after the fight. “So finishing anybody in this organization means a lot.”
New Training Camp and Fresh Start
Rodriguez dedicated the victory to his late coach Duke Roufus, who passed away in October 2025. The loss prompted Rodriguez to make major changes to his training setup.
He moved from Roufus Sport in Milwaukee to Las Vegas, where he now trains at Xtreme Couture under coach Eric Nicksick. It had been 10 months since Rodriguez’s last fight.
“I lost my coach in October and it was really hard for me,” Rodriguez said in his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. “Coming off two losses and showing who I am, it means the world to me.”
Rodriguez said he is loving his new life in Las Vegas. He praised his new team including Anthony, Pedro, and Eric for their support since Day One.

“Living in Vegas has definitely been an adjustment to the Midwest, but I’m very grateful for my team,” Rodriguez said. “These guys have pushed me since Day One.”
Rodriguez already has his eye on a return date. He wants to compete at Noche UFC, the UFC’s annual Mexican Independence Day event, which typically takes place in September.
“I’d like to stay busy, though,” Rodriguez said when asked about his next fight. “Hopefully the UFC does a UFC Noche and if they think that’s a good timeline for me.”
Rodriguez said he doesn’t have any specific opponents in mind but is open to any matchup. He noted that he has never turned down a fight and plans to stay ready for whatever opportunity comes next.
