Although there’s no official UFC Championship on the line when Masvidal and Diaz meet in the main event of UFC 244 on Saturday night, the winner will walk away with a brand new BMF belt.
The BMF title came about as a result of Diaz’s post-fight interview at UFC 241.
Before his unanimous decision win against Anthony Pettis in August, Diaz mentioned that he was solely interested in fighting those who he respected as being real fighters, and not “all the lame-ass fighters that aren’t doing s—.” Diaz took the opportunity to explain this on the microphone, again, following his victory at UFC 241.
“The reason I was off was because everybody sucks and there was nobody to fight,” Diaz said to Joe Rogan.
“But with this belt, I want to defend it against Jorge Masvidal… He had a good last fight. All respect to the man, but there ain’t no gangsters in this game anymore, there ain’t nobody who done it right but me and him.”
At the time, the belt that Diaz had mentioned was imaginary. Even with his win over Pettis, he was still a long way from fighting Kamaru Usman for the UFC Welterweight Championship.
But it was this post-fight interview that spurred the creation of the BMF belt, a title that would be awarded to the “baddest motherf***er.”
Now, on Saturday, November 2, Masvidal and Diaz will stand toe-to-toe inside the octagon during what is expected to be one of the biggest PPV events of the year.
