Two Virginia residents have filed a lawsuit seeking to stop the UFC fight President Donald Trump is hosting at the White House on June 14. The event, called UFC Freedom 250, is scheduled to coincide with both the nation’s 250th birthday celebration and Trump’s 80th birthday.
The lawsuit was filed Saturday by the Public Integrity Project on behalf of Paul Romano, a Vietnam War veteran, and Susan Douglas, a civic activist. The legal challenge names the National Park Service and Department of the Interior as defendants.
The plaintiffs argue that the massive structure erected on the White House grounds was not authorized by Congress and did not undergo required environmental review. They claim the event violates federal laws that restrict private use of national monuments and parkland.
Allegations of Financial Benefit
The lawsuit states that Trump and UFC President Dana White will financially benefit from the event. According to the complaint, Trump bought up to $50,000 in stock in TKO Group Holdings, UFC’s parent company, in March 2026.

The suit also cites reports that UFC is selling VIP packages for between $1 million and $1.5 million. “This is fundamentally a private, commercial, corrupt use of our most sacred national monuments for private gain,” said Brendan Ballou, founder of the Public Integrity Project.
White is a close friend and supporter of Trump. The lawsuit argues that the president is giving White “unfettered access to the White House and Lincoln Memorial to stage a private, for-profit sports event, with all the promotional and branding opportunities that accompany such access.”
The plaintiffs acknowledge that Congress authorized events to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. However, they argue that UFC Freedom 250 does not qualify because it is “a celebration of the UFC’s brand and the 80th anniversary of Donald Trump’s birth.”
Construction and Event Details
Construction crews have built a fight cage on the South Lawn using a massive 92-foot, 600-ton steel structure known as “the Claw.” The arched lighting grid now towers over the White House and has re-routed presidential travel.
A weigh-in for the fighters is scheduled for June 13 at the Lincoln Memorial. “The Lincoln Memorial is sacred ground, and it honors everyone who has ever worn this country’s uniform,” Romano said in a news release. “Using it as a backdrop for a for-profit cage fight so the President and his friends can make money is a desecration.”
The lawsuit argues that normal federal regulations prohibit special events on the South Lawn or at the Lincoln Memorial without proper authorization. The plaintiffs claim the event fails to meet even temporary rules allowing 250th anniversary celebrations because it is not “planned, organized, and executed” by the federal government.
According to the complaint, Douglas is a retired government employee who frequently organizes events on the National Mall and near the White House. Romano is a retired Air Force sergeant who works part-time as a ride-share driver and regularly travels past the affected areas.
The plaintiffs filed for a temporary restraining order, claiming they are suffering “aesthetic injuries” from the Claw’s construction. Douglas has plans to visit the area four times before the event concludes, including on both the weigh-in and fight nights.
Approximately 4,300 military personnel are expected to attend the event. However, several celebrities White reportedly invited, including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Adam Sandler, and Jared Leto, have declined.
The White House released a statement calling the lawsuit “obstructionist, baseless, and dilatory.” The statement said the suit was brought “simply to prevent President Trump from hosting what will undoubtedly go down as one of the most historic sporting events in our Nation’s history during our semiquincentennial celebration.”
The forecast for Washington DC on June 14 shows a chance of showers and thunderstorms, with conditions expected to deteriorate into the evening when the main event is scheduled to begin.
