Jon Jones was not on the UFC Freedom 250 card at the White House, but he watched it happen. The former UFC champion said the historic event affected him in ways he did not expect.
“I absolutely loved it. It really showed me — it humbled me, and it showed me that our sport is at a prestigious level right now,” Jones said in a recent interview with Red Corner MMA.
Jones has been one of the most talented fighters in MMA history, but his relationship with the UFC has become strained in recent months. His absence from the White House card was not a surprise given the tension between him and the promotion.
From Taboo Sport to White House Event
Jones reflected on how much MMA has changed since he started his career. He said the sport was viewed very differently when he first began fighting.
“When I first started MMA, we weren’t allowed to compete in New York state,” Jones said. “People looked at it as taboo, a very weird thing to do.”
He contrasted that with where the sport stands today. “Now, it’s like a very honorable sport to be a part of — probably one of the most honorable sports to be a part of right now in history,” Jones said.

The UFC Freedom 250 event took place on June 14, 2026, at the Ellipse in Washington, D.C. The card drew 85,000 fans and attracted 34 million viewers worldwide.
Ciryl Gane fought Alex Pereira for the interim heavyweight title on the card. That fight could have featured Jones instead.
Why Jones Was Left Off the Card
Jones had been campaigning for a spot on the historic White House card. He believed his chances of fighting at the event were strong.
However, UFC CEO Dana White made it clear that Jones was never really in consideration. White said Jones was “never remotely” considered for the lineup.
The tension between Jones and the UFC stems from his recent career decisions. Jones was supposed to fight Tom Aspinall in a heavyweight title unification bout.
Instead of taking that fight, Jones chose to vacate his heavyweight title and opt for retirement. The UFC did not reward him with a fight on the White House lawn because of that decision.
Jones holds a 28-1 record in MMA with a 22-1 record in the UFC. He has a reasonable claim to being one of the most important fighters in the sport’s history.

Despite the strained relationship, Jones said the White House event made him feel better about his own career and legacy. “I’m grateful to be considered one of the best in this sport’s history,” Jones said.
He added that the White House card changed how he views his place in MMA. “It makes me feel a lot more important since the White House card,” Jones said.
White has not shown urgency in booking Jones for any upcoming fights. Jones has been visibly frustrated by that in recent months.
Whether Jones’ positive comments about UFC Freedom 250 will change anything about his future with the promotion remains unclear. For now, Jones remains on the outside looking in while the UFC continues without him.
