Retired UFC star Dustin Poirier was arrested at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport on Father’s Day on a public drunkenness charge. Police arrested him after airport staff denied him boarding.
Police bodycam footage showed Poirier arguing with airport staff and using profanity. In the video, he told officers “I’ll fight you right now.”
UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones responded to the incident days later on social media. He told Poirier to “keep your head up” and said the arrest should not define his life or career.
Jones Draws From Personal Experience
Jones wrote on X that he wanted Poirier to know “life happens” and “this too shall pass.” He encouraged the retired fighter to stay busy and move forward.
Jones has faced his own legal troubles involving alcohol over the years. In 2021, he was arrested on suspicion of battering his fiancee and later wrote that his brain “can’t handle” alcohol anymore.
He compared retiring from UFC to retiring from the military in his posts. Jones said he discusses these types of challenges with special forces friends because the transition is difficult for many fighters.

“I’m still under contract with the UFC. There’s definitely a chance. If it’s the right fight I’ll come back for sure.

In his message to Poirier, Jones said “Give yourself some grace. Don’t beat yourself up over it. We’ve all done dumb things.”
When a fan asked if Jones gave Poirier a pass for using the N-word during the airport incident, Jones replied “Absolutely” and said he took zero offense.
Poirier Admits He Needs Help
Poirier addressed the arrest in an emotional Instagram post after the bodycam footage became public. He admitted he is “at the point where I need some help.”
The former lightweight contender said walking away from fighting has not been easy on him. He wrote that alcohol is not the answer and has ruined his father’s life.
Poirier said he will not allow alcohol to ruin his life or hurt his family. He wrote that his family deserves him “at 100%” and he is trying to get his mind right.
The retired fighter said he is working to take the right next steps. His public statement changed the conversation from criticism to concern about mental health challenges athletes face after retirement.

Jones praised Poirier for being honest about his mental state. He said there are many similarities between fighters and military personnel dealing with retirement transitions.
The bodycam footage sparked debate among MMA fans. Some appreciated Jones for showing understanding instead of judgment, while others pointed out the irony given his own legal history.
When asked about a potential comeback, Jones said “never say never.” He said he has been training with wrestler Gable Steveson and is moving well, suggesting stem cell treatments are working.
