    TLDR

    • Canelo Alvarez lost to Terence Crawford by unanimous decision in September 2025 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas
    • Crawford became undisputed super middleweight champion after the victory
    • Alvarez revealed on TV Azteca he wants a rematch in the second quarter of 2026
    • Crawford has been responsive to rematch discussions according to reports
    • Alvarez still has two fights remaining on his deal with Turki Alalshikh

Canelo Alvarez has set his sights on a rematch with Terence Crawford following his loss in September. The Mexican fighter revealed his plans during a recent appearance on TV Azteca.

Crawford defeated Alvarez by unanimous decision over 12 rounds at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The American claimed all the undisputed super middleweight titles in the fight.

The loss marked only the third defeat in Alvarez’s 68-fight professional career. His previous losses came against Floyd Mayweather in 2013 and Dmitry Bivol in 2022.

Alvarez underwent surgery for an elbow injury after the Crawford fight. This pushed back any immediate plans for his return to the ring.

The former undisputed super middleweight champion has now confirmed when he wants to fight again. He told TV Azteca he is targeting the second quarter of 2026 for the rematch.

According to the TV Azteca report, Crawford has been responsive to discussions about a second fight. This marks a potential first for Alvarez, who has never pursued a rematch after a loss.

Dan Rafael reported last month that the original fight contract did not include a rematch clause. Despite this, both fighters appear interested in meeting again.

    Rematch Negotiations Underway

Marcos Villegas from Fight Hub TV on YouTube first tweeted about the potential rematch. TV Azteca later confirmed that negotiations had begun.

Alvarez still has two fights remaining on his contract with Turki Alalshikh. Alalshikh made the first Crawford fight possible through his promotion company.

This existing deal makes a rematch more realistic from a business standpoint. The promotional infrastructure is already in place for another major event.

Crawford has options beyond the Alvarez rematch. Jake Paul’s business partner Nakisa Bidarian revealed Crawford accepted an offer to fight Paul after Gervonta Davis faced legal issues.

    Fan Reaction Mixed

Some boxing analysts believe Crawford should pursue other goals. Roy Jones Jr. told The Ring that Crawford should target a title at 160 pounds.

Jones said Crawford should “go down and win a title at 160, and close it off.” He questioned the need for a Canelo rematch given Alvarez’s accomplished career.

Janibek Alimkhanuly and Erislandy Lara will unify titles on December 6. This could create a three-belt opportunity for Crawford at middleweight.

Fan reaction to the rematch news has been lukewarm. Many social media users expect Crawford to win again based on his dominant first performance.

One fan wrote that Alvarez would “get beat again” while another called it a “waste of time.” Several commenters predicted an even more one-sided result in a second fight.

Other fans were unsurprised by the rematch talk. Some noted they expected a trilogy between the two fighters from the start.

Crawford became a five-division champion with his victory over Alvarez. A middleweight title would make him a six-division champion and potentially undisputed at 160 pounds.

Alvarez revealed on TV Azteca that the rematch is his priority for 2026. Crawford’s team has engaged in early negotiations according to the Mexican network’s report.
