TLDR
- Chris Eubank Jr is facing legal proceedings from the British Boxing Board of Control and Matchroom Boxing over claims made at a September press conference
- Eubank alleged Matchroom representatives delayed his ambulance by over 20 minutes after his April fight with Conor Benn at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
- The delay shown in Eubank’s video was actually caused by a communication breakdown between the ambulance bay and stadium control, not Matchroom or the Board
- Eddie Hearn has threatened legal action, saying the accusations are “unforgettable” and promising to “deal with that”
- Eubank was fined £100,000 for smashing an egg in Benn’s face and £10,000 for posting banned sauna images before the first fight
Chris Eubank Jr is facing legal action from both the British Boxing Board of Control and Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing. The proceedings stem from accusations Eubank made at a September press conference for his rematch with Conor Benn.
Eubank claimed that representatives from Matchroom delayed his ambulance for more than 20 minutes after their April fight at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He stated he was lying on a gurney with an oxygen mask while the vehicle was unable to leave. Eubank argued the delay could have been life-threatening if his injuries had been more serious.
Last week, Eubank posted a 10-second video clip showing his ambulance attempting to leave the stadium. The footage appeared to show chaotic scenes outside the venue. However, the actual cause of the delay was different from what Eubank suggested.
This is footage of my ambulance being blocked from leaving Tottenham Hotspur stadium on April 26th & my team shouting at security to open the gate, so we can get to hospital. At this point I’ve been in the back of that ambulance for over 20 minutes. Eddie Hearn told everyone I… pic.twitter.com/rJWhIRTKnJ

Sources indicate the holdup was due to a communication breakdown between the ambulance bay and control at the stadium. The delay had nothing to do with Hearn or Board general secretary Robert Smith. The total time between Eubank leaving the ring and arriving at Royal London Hospital was less than 45 minutes.
The hospital is located seven miles south of the stadium. Upon arrival, Eubank received treatment for severe dehydration and stitches for a facial wound. He was discharged two days after the fight on April 18.
Hearn responded to the allegations in September. He pointed out there are logs of procedures for every fight, including when ambulances arrive and leave. The promoter called the accusations “unforgettable” and promised to address them.

Financial Penalties and Previous Controversies
Eubank has already paid substantial fines related to the first Benn fight. He was fined £100,000 by the BBBoC for smashing an egg into Benn’s face at a press conference. The egg incident was a reference to an early WBC hearing that suggested increased egg consumption might have caused the presence of clomifene in Benn’s system.
Eubank also lost money on the eve of the bout when he missed the middleweight limit. He weighed in at 0.05 pounds over the 160-pound limit. This failure cost him a reported $500,000 according to the contract between the fighters.
The British boxer did make the agreed 170-pound weight on fight morning. However, he posted footage of himself wearing heat suits and suggested sauna use. These practices violate BBBoC rules.
The Board fined Eubank £10,000 for misuse of social media regarding the images. The punishment added to his growing list of penalties from the first fight.
Attacks on Boxing Officials
At the September press conference, Eubank also made accusations against Robert Smith. He claimed the Board’s general secretary colluded with Matchroom to make decisions favoring Benn. Eubank said Smith allowed media and cameramen into his private weigh-in, which contributed to him missing weight.
The boxer further alleged that Smith personally escorted Billy Joe Saunders, described as an arch nemesis, to his changing room on fight night. Eubank claimed this was an attempt to disrupt his preparations. He called Smith “nothing more than a puppet and a pawn” in Matchroom’s back pocket.
Both Smith and Hearn disputed Eubank’s version of events at the weigh-in. They stated Eubank missed weight because he arrived an hour late. Multiple reporters present at the official weigh-in supported this account.
Eubank also claimed his contract prohibited Benn from using gloves with horsehair. However, Matchroom Boxing CEO Frank Smith insisted no such stipulation existed in their contract. Both fighters had contracts with Saudi Arabian company SELA for the bout rather than directly with each other.
The BBBoC has not yet announced what sanctions it will impose on Eubank. A heavy fine is expected to result from his comments about Smith and the Board.
This is not the first defamation issue involving Eubank at press conferences. One year earlier, he made allegations against promoter Frank Warren, accusing him of lying and cheating in boxing. Warren sued Eubank for defamation, with the parties reaching a settlement in May.
The rematch between Eubank and Benn is scheduled for Saturday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The same weight stipulations will be in place for the 12-round contest. Eubank won the first fight by unanimous decision over 12 rounds.
