Tyson Fury announced at a press conference Monday that he plans to train alone for his comeback fight against Arslanbek Makhmudov on April 11. The heavyweight bout will take place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and air on Netflix.
“I’m like Clubber Lang,” Fury told presenter Anna Woolhouse and boxing legend Lennox Lewis. “I’m going to train alone.”
The 37-year-old explained that his experience in boxing means he knows his body well enough to prepare without a full training team. “I know what to do, I know how to go 12 rounds, I know how to push myself when I need to but I also know when to take a rest when I need to,” Fury said.
Fury hasn’t fought since losing to Oleksandr Usyk by unanimous decision in December 2024. That defeat marked his second straight loss to the Ukrainian champion, with Usyk also winning their first fight in May 2024 for the undisputed heavyweight championship.
Fury Disputes Usyk Losses
The British heavyweight bitterly disputed both fight outcomes and believes Usyk will seek a third match before the end of 2025. “Dick Turpin wore a mask when he was robbing people. I got robbed in broad daylight with the world watching,” Fury told Sky Sports.
He predicted Usyk will request a trilogy fight because of financial reasons. “He’ll be begging for a trilogy by the end of the year. There’s no one for him to fight to make any money,” Fury said.
“I’m the man, with or without belts,” he continued. “I’m the biggest fish in the pond.”
Fury explained his decision to return to boxing after retiring for the fifth time over a year ago. “I came back for one reason only, and that’s to make boxing great again,” he said at the press conference.
He claimed the sport has declined since his retirement and even cited ChatGPT as agreeing that boxing reaches its peak when he’s actively fighting. “I bring a circus, I bring an entourage, I bring entertainment, I bring action, I bring cameras,” Fury said.
Training in Thailand
Fury has been training in Thailand surrounded by his wife and children since his retirement. He insisted he never fully stopped training during his time away from the sport.
“I was enjoying being retired…but it comes a point where you just want to go back to work,” Fury explained. “I feel fresh, I feel good, and if I was on a decline I would say it. I’d be the first to say ‘I don’t got it no more’ and I won’t box, but I don’t feel as if I’ve lost anything.”
In his last fight against Usyk, SugarHill Steward served as his main trainer with Andy Lee in his corner. His father John Fury was not present for that bout.
It remains unclear who will be in Fury’s corner on fight night despite his claims about training alone. The press conference on Monday featured a face-off between Fury and Makhmudov, with John Fury causing disruption by targeting former boxer Carl Froch.
Fury acknowledged that Makhmudov presents a serious challenge as the WBA’s number six ranked heavyweight. “Big, dangerous man and someone I have to respect or else I’ll get knocked out,” Fury said.
The fighter also addressed his long-time rival Anthony Joshua, who recently lost two friends in a car accident. “Let’s give the man the respect he deserves and his time away from the sport,” Fury said, putting any potential matchup between them on hold while Joshua mourns.
