Polish light heavyweight Iwo Baraniewski has spoken out for the first time since suffering the first loss of his professional MMA career at UFC 331 on Saturday night.

Baraniewski carried a perfect 9-0 record into his fight against Alonzo Menifield at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. After three rounds of back-and-forth action, Menifield was awarded a split decision victory with scores of 29-28, 28-29, and 29-28.

Many observers believed Baraniewski had won the fight. The 27-year-old took to Instagram to address the result with a brief but gracious statement.

“My first professional loss, but not my first in life,” Baraniewski wrote. “I’ll take a moment to rest, and I’ll come back stronger. Thank you to everyone who supports me and stands by me.”

The fight marked the first time in Baraniewski’s career that he went the full distance to a decision. Prior to UFC 331, he had finished all nine of his professional opponents, including three straight first-round knockouts in the UFC.

Baraniewski’s Rapid Rise Through UFC Ranks

Baraniewski entered the UFC with a flashy resume. He won his first two professional fights by armbar and his next three by knockout while competing for Polish promotion Babilon MMA.

His performance on Dana White’s Contender Series earned him a UFC contract after he defeated Mahamed Aly in just 20 seconds. Once in the UFC, Baraniewski continued his finishing ways with knockout victories over Ibo Aslan in 99 seconds, Austen Lane in 28 seconds, and Junior Tafa in 85 seconds.

Saturday’s bout against the No. 14-ranked Menifield represented Baraniewski’s first chance to break into the light heavyweight top 15. The fight opened the main card of UFC 331, marking the Polish fighter’s highest-profile assignment to date.

Before the fight, Baraniewski expressed excitement about the opportunity. “It’s the first time I’ll be fighting on the main card of a numbered event, so it’s a huge motivation,” he said.

    Menifield Battles Through Gruesome Injury

Menifield showed extreme toughness during the fight while dealing with a severe hand injury. The 38-year-old appeared to suffer what looked like a broken thumb during the contest.

A doctor checked Menifield’s hand between rounds before the third frame due to a deep cut. The fight was allowed to continue, and Menifield pushed through the pain to secure the victory.

During his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, Menifield displayed his injury to the camera, revealing bone protruding through the skin. The crowd responded with audible groans.

Menifield was immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment and stitches. His exact diagnosis and timeline for return to competition remain unclear.

The victory marked Menifield’s 12th win in UFC competition, improving his promotional record to 12-6-1. He entered the fight coming off a first-round knockout victory over Zhang Mingyang at UFC Macau, which earned Fight of the Night honors.

Baraniewski’s training background includes judo before transitioning to mixed martial arts. Throughout his UFC run, he had expressed a desire to showcase more of his complete skill set beyond his knockout power, but his fights kept ending too quickly.

Saturday night finally gave him that opportunity to display his full arsenal over three rounds. However, two of the three judges saw the fight in Menifield’s favor.
