The UFC has officially confirmed Islam Makhachev will defend his welterweight championship against Ian Garry at UFC 330 on August 15 in Philadelphia. The announcement comes after weeks of speculation and public back-and-forth between the two fighters.
The matchup will headline the UFC 330 card at Philadelphia’s Xfinity Mobile Arena. Makhachev, who moved up from lightweight to capture the welterweight title, will face the #1-ranked contender in his division.
However, the fight announcement came despite Makhachev publicly expressing a preference for a different opponent. According to reports from Red Corner MMA, the champion recently said he would rather defend his title against undefeated Ecuadorian fighter Michael Morales.
Champion’s Preference for Different Opponent
Makhachev explained his reasoning by pointing to Garry’s sole career loss. “If we pick between Ian and Morales in terms of my legacy, I would go with Morales because he’s still undefeated,” Makhachev stated.
The Dagestani champion suggested that beating Garry would carry less weight for his legacy. He indicated that critics would point to Shavkat Rakhmonov’s 2024 victory over the Irishman.

Garry suffered his first professional MMA defeat when he lost a decision to the unbeaten Rakhmonov in 2024. The loss ended his own undefeated streak and temporarily stalled his rise in the welterweight division.
Since that setback, Garry has won two consecutive fights by unanimous decision. He defeated Carlos Prates and former champion Belal Muhammad to earn his #1 contender status.
Garry Responds to Champion’s Comments
Hours before the UFC made the fight official, Garry posted a video on Instagram addressing Makhachev’s recent comments. The Irish fighter accused the champion of trying to avoid facing him.
“Of course, he would. Of course, he’d rather fight Morales,” Garry said in the video. “Because Morales hasn’t beaten anyone in the sport.”
Garry continued his criticism by listing other opponents Makhachev had mentioned. “He said he’d rather fight Kamaru Usman. Kamaru Usman has won two fights in the last 10 he’s had,” Garry stated.
The challenger also referenced Makhachev’s mention of facing Prates. “He said he’d rather fight Prates, the man who I beat,” Garry said. “He’d rather fight anybody except me.”
Fan reactions to the matchup have been mixed on social media. Some fans praised Makhachev for moving up in weight and fighting a top contender on a winning streak.
Other fans questioned whether Garry deserves the title shot given his loss to Rakhmonov. Comments on the announcement post ranged from excitement about the matchup to concerns about Makhachev’s activity level as champion.
One fan comment highlighted the champion’s willingness to face elite competition: “One thing you can always count on when it comes to Islam is that he will always fight fighters on a winstreak, in their prime and when they are the most dangerous.”
Another comment suggested future matchups, proposing that Michael Morales should face either Prates or Kamaru Usman in a number one contender fight. Prates recently claimed the UFC told him he would face the winner of Makhachev versus Garry for his title shot.
The UFC 330 event will stream live on Paramount Plus. The card will also feature a women’s strawweight title fight between Mackenzie Dern and Tatiana Suarez as the co-main event.
