Francis Ngannou and Jake Paul had to be pulled apart by security after a heated confrontation backstage at Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions event on Saturday night. Multiple eyewitnesses confirmed the altercation took place at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, following the MVP Netflix MMA card.
According to sources present at the scene, the dispute began when Ngannou approached Paul about using his name in promotional materials. Paul reportedly responded with taunts about Ngannou’s recent losses in professional boxing.
The exchange quickly escalated into a profanity-laced shouting match between the two fighters. Security personnel and members of both teams intervened before the argument turned physical.
Insiders told MMA Fighting that both men exchanged threats and the scene alarmed Netflix executives and athletic commission officials who were on site. Sources described the situation as nearly boiling over into a brawl.

Ngannou Explains His Side
Ngannou later addressed the incident, calling Paul’s remarks about his career “disrespectful.” The former UFC heavyweight champion insisted he never intended for the exchange to become physical.
However, Ngannou admitted tempers flared when Paul continued to mock his boxing record. He said he is open to fighting Paul under the right conditions but refuses to be “used” for publicity.
The confrontation came on the same night Ngannou knocked out Phillipe Lins in the first round at 4 minutes and 31 seconds. The 38-year-old former champion showcased his speed and power in his return to MMA competition.
Ngannou left the UFC in January 2023 as the reigning heavyweight champion and became a free agent. He then competed in two professional boxing matches before returning to MMA at the MVP event.
Paul Dismisses the Incident
Paul took to social media to address reports of the clash, dismissing Ngannou as “jealous” of his success. He claimed he was never in danger during the confrontation.
The YouTube star turned boxer said Ngannou approached him aggressively but that he “stood his ground” and was prepared to fight on the spot. Paul insisted he is the bigger draw in combat sports.
Paul also used the incident to fuel speculation about a potential future bout between the pair. He has been vocal about his willingness to face former UFC fighters in both boxing and MMA competition.
The 29-year-old founded Most Valuable Promotions and has been expanding into MMA promotion. Saturday’s event featured Ronda Rousey submitting Gina Carano in 17 seconds and Mike Perry defeating Nate Diaz.
The backstage incident was separate from another altercation at the same event. Boxer Claressa Shields was banned from all MVP events after she was caught on video slapping fellow boxer Alycia Baumgardner in a private backstage area.
MVP issued a statement calling Shields’ behavior “unacceptable” and implementing a zero-tolerance policy for hostile conduct. Baumgardner said she would handle the situation legally and professionally.
Neither Ngannou nor Paul have announced plans for a potential fight against each other. Both fighters are currently exploring opportunities with multiple promotions in boxing and MMA.
