Tony Ferguson strikes Justin Gaethje at UFC 249

Although there’s no UFC title on the line this weekend, there’s certainly a “big fight feeling” among combat sports fans.

The UFC 279 fight card has been updated. Nate Diaz will now fight Tony Ferguson in the main event. Khamzat Chimaev will now fight Kevin Holland in a five-round co-main event.

In an unexpected matchup between two fighters on very different trajectories, fan-favorite UFC veteran Nate Diaz will return to the cage to face fast-rising undefeated contender Khamzat Chimaev. Diaz vs. Chimaev is the main event of this Saturday night’s UFC 279 PPV event in Las Vegas. The only way to watch the fight live on Saturday night is by either attending the venue itself or by ordering the official ESPN+ PPV stream.

Diaz is fighting on the final fight of his UFC contract, but the odds won’t be in his favor this time around. He’s set to enter the fight as high as a +850 underdog at some bookmakers. But Diaz fans will tell you that he’s still more than a chance of securing the upset, and if there’s ever been a fighter that you can never truly count out — it’s Nate Diaz. That theory will be tested on Saturday night, however, as Chimaev has not just won all of his professional bouts to date but looked mightily impressive in doing so.

Since joining the promotion, Chimaev has won all five of his bouts, stopping his first four opponents before eventually being tested by Gilbert Burns in April. Chimaev and Burns went toe-to-toe for three rounds before Chimaev left with a unanimous decision win and “Fight of the Night” honors, as well.

This weekend’s UFC 279 fight card will also feature many other fan-favorite fighters such as Tony Ferguson, who will battle Li Jingliang in his move up to welterweight. Kevin Holland’s striking will be tested by Daniel Rodriguez on the main card, as well. Other UFC 279 main card bouts include a fantastic women’s bantamweight matchup between Irene Aldana and Macy Chiasson, as well as what should be an exciting fight between Johnny Walker and Ion Cutelaba.
