Sean O’Malley vs. Thomas Almeida play-by-play live blog

Round one

O’Malley comes out active. Starts with lead leg kicks and body kicks. Keeping this one at a longer range so far and it looks like the kickboxing bout he was expecting. Another body kick from O’Malley. It’s all O’Malley right now. Almeida just sitting back and waiting. O’Malley feints and Almeida comes back with a right hand and left hand that falls well short. He hasn’t found his range yet. O’Malley spinning back kick to the body. Almeida closes the distance and comes with a looping hook. Leg kick for Almeida. Many expected him to attempt more of those leg kicks but we’re not seeing them so far.

Halfway through the first round…

Leg kick from O’Malley. Body kick from O’Malley. O’Malley’s distance management is superb in this fight. Responds to an Almeida leg kick with a sharp 1-2. O’Malley drops Almeida and walks away but referee Mark Smith hasn’t stopped the bout. The fight is still on. Almeida stands back up. O’Malley all over him now. And now it looks like he rolled his ankle? Spinning kick from O’Malley and he falls. Almeida stalking now. Almeida hands up and walking through O’Malley’s shots now.

Round two

Thomas Almeida now advancing to start round two. O’Malley punching more to start round two. He lands a solid low kick to Almeida’s lead leg. Almeida leg kick lands and O’Malley falls. He chops at it again. Looks like O’Malley can’t take too many more of those. O’Malley missing his punches now. But lead oblique kick is landing well. Another oblique kick for O’Malley. Almeida looking better here. He’s chopping at the lead leg of O’Malley again.

Halfway through the second round…

O’Malley with body kicks. Hands down now and trying to bait Almeida into throwing something. Another front kick lands for O’Malley, right to the body. Almeida settling into the fight. O’Malley not looking as dangerous as before. This fight might age terribly considering he had a chance to finish Almeida in round one but chose to walk away instead.

O’Malley advancing. Longer punches now. Crowding Almeida but Almeida comes back with a heavy leg kick that forces O’Malley to reset and recover. O’Malley flying knee attempt and lands on his back after missing. Almeida stacking him and trying to land some punches.

Round three

O’Malley up on the scorecards so far but he’s slowed down and doesn’t look as dangerous as he did in the opening minutes. Almeida not doing enough to take over, though. Almeida advancing. O’Malley oblique kick. Heavy leg kick from O’Malley. Jab lands for O’Malley. Now he’s making Almeida miss. Comes back with a heavy right hand. Another body kick from O’Malley. Almeida doesn’t seem in it — too slow for O’Malley even with the apparent damage to his legs.

Halfway through round three…

Almeida coming through and trying to land a big punch but O’Malley reading them well. A nice right hand lands for O’Malley. Almeida just walking forward now but not connecting with anything. Almeida spinning kick and slips over. O’Malley lets him stand and they’re back to it. O’Malley drops Almeida with a left hand and then he tries for another walk-off knockout. Referee Mark Smith doesn’t stop it — again — so O’Malley walks over to him and crushes him with a powerful right hand to finish the fight.
