Round one

Grasso going to the leg kicks immediately. Lands two. Grasso misses with a big right hand and a leg kick. Barber pushes Grasso to the cage but Grasso turns and swings Barber around. Grasso separates and then Barber follows her with long punches. Barber misses with a right hand and Grasso tags her with two sharp punches to the chin. Grasso pushing Barber to the cage now. Barber trying to throw Grasso around but Grasso showing her strength in this matchup and not being bullied into positions. They’re swapping positions against the cage. Grasso big right elbow connects. Barber throwing elbows as they separate from the clinch. Barber advances again. Barber throwing bombs. Grasso takes them on the chin and fires back with heavy punches of her own.

Round two
Grasso’s boxing was the big difference in round one. She’s sticking to the outside and waiting for chances to counter Barber. Grasso just landed some bombs on Barber; two heavy hands come through and land on the chin. Grasso’s speed advantage is evident. Barber is dangerous at close range and misses with a combination of wild punches as they separate from the clinch. Barber connects with a knee in the clinch. Grasso breaks. Barber’s punches are landing now. Two big shots land and then Grasso responds with a sharp counter. Body kick lands for Barber and then she secures a takedown. Grasso defending from the bottom and Barber falls into an armbar attempt. Grasso sweeps and ends up on top in side control — beautiful transition. She’s controlling the position now. She has one arm locked and scoots across to the other side to go for the arm-triangle. She’s got the back now and hunting for the rear-naked choke. Barber survives the round.

Round three
Barber throwing combinations and missing everything. Basically shadowboxing at the start of round three. Grasso retreating and waiting for her chance to counter. Both fighters trading. Grasso ends up pushing Barber back to the cage. She’s working Barber in the clinch. Barber takedown and she’s on top. Barber’s ground and pound comes into play now but Grasso gets up and is now retreating. She’s circling and trying to take a break from Barber’s relentless pressure. Barber’s getting wild now and throwing heavy hooks. Barber’s winning this round by making it a dogfight. Grasso still calm and relaxed but almost too relaxed considering Barber is hunting for the finish. Barber doing all she can to finish the fight. Grasso survives the round. Barber’s best round by far but far too late because Grasso controlled rounds one and two.
Official decision: Alexa Grasso def. Maycee Barber via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
