Jessica Eye vs. Joanne Calderwood play-by-play
Round one
Fast start. They clinch instantly and both trade punches. Clinching again. Calderwood works the body. Eye stays strong and attempts strikes of her own. Eye pushes her to the cage and is leaning against her now. Eye controlling the clinch position against the cage well as she’s using her head to keep Calderwood pinned against the fence. Clinching again in the middle of the cage now. Calderwood leg kicks, knees, elbows, have been the story so far. It’s a fast fight as Eye pushes her again to the cage. It’s a close-range brawl. Eye latches onto a single-leg and Calderwood responds with some punches. Calderwood breaks free and they clinch again. Calderwood is landing good shots to the body inside the clinch. Eye is controlling the position but not landing the most effective strikes. Calderwood looking tired as we near the end of the first round. Eye has been smothering her from start to finish. Body kick lands for Calderwood. Leg kick for Calderwood. Eye missing with her strikes. That’s the end of round one. Crazy round. Not particularly easy to score and looked like Calderwood landed more.
Calderwood 10-9
Round two
They’re trading again. Front kick from Calderwood connects with some power. They’re still trading punches. Eye looking powerful in the clinch. She’s landing heavy punches to the head and body in the clinch. Pace is slowing but Eye still packing power in her strikes. Eye comes forward and Calderwood adjusts this time and responds with two heavy knees. Great strikes and a brilliant way to counter Eye’s close-range fighting. Calderwood having success at range. She’s mixing up her strikes now and landing kicks and punches. Calderwood has really stepped up in this round. Eye hasn’t gone back to the clinch after eating those two knees from earlier in the round. But just as we write that, Eye shoots forward and gets a double-leg takedown. She can’t pass guard though and Calderwood’s back is resting against the cage.
Calderwood 10-9 (20-18)
Round three
Eye shoots for an immediate takedown to start the round, and she’s pushed Calderwood back to the cage. Eye isn’t progressing with the takedown, though, and Calderwood is keeping good posture against the cage. We’re now two-and-a-half minutes into the round and they’re in the same position. Eye still focusing on the takedown and Calderwood defending it. Referee Keith Peterson breaks up the fight and separates the fighters. Calderwood winning at this distance. Not particularly heavy strikes but enough activity to help her win this round. Eye advancing again and Calderwood keeping her away with push kicks. Back to the clinch and both fighters are landing good strikes. Calderwood lands the best one, though, as a strong knee connects upstairs. Eye falls to the ground at the end of the round.
