    Gilbert Burns vs Mike Malott

Sources: CBS Sports | CBS Sports | DraftKings

Mike Malott will enter the octagon as a heavy favorite when he faces Gilbert Burns in the main event of UFC Fight Night on Saturday at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Canada. Betting odds from DraftKings Sportsbook list Malott between -285 and -380, while Burns comes back as an underdog at +230 to +300.

The event marks a critical moment for both fighters, though for very different reasons. Burns, ranked 11th in the welterweight division, is trying to snap a four-fight losing streak that has put his career in jeopardy. Malott, meanwhile, gets his first UFC main event opportunity in front of his home country crowd.

The preliminary card is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. ET, with the main card starting at approximately 8 p.m. ET on Paramount+.

Burns Fighting to Save His Career

Gilbert Burns enters this fight at age 39 with his UFC future uncertain. His last bout ended in a knockout loss to Michael Morales at UFC Fight Night last May, his fourth consecutive defeat.

The Brazilian veteran briefly considered retirement after the Morales fight. He suffered a concussion and a severe hematoma in that loss, which led him to question whether he still had the heart to compete.

After reviewing footage and taking time off, Burns changed his mind. He noted that his losing streak came against elite competition, including fighters currently ranked in the top six of the welterweight division.

Burns has spent the layoff working with sports psychologists and refining his training approach. He took the second-longest break of his career to prepare for this fight.

Despite his recent struggles, Burns has a decorated career record of 22-9. He has earned four Performance of the Night awards and one Fight of the Night honor. Burns also holds the third-most armbar submission wins in UFC history with three.

Beyond MMA, Burns is an accomplished Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. He won the IBJJF world championship in 2011 and the IBJJF World No-Gi championship in 2013.

    Malott Gets Homecoming Main Event

Mike Malott, 34, will compete in his sixth consecutive UFC fight in Canada. The Burlington, Ontario native has posted a 6-1 record since joining the UFC after an impressive showing on Dana White’s Contender Series in October 2021.

Malott is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Kevin Holland at UFC Fight Night last October. He has won his last three fights and carries an overall record of 13-2-1.

The Canadian has five wins by knockout, six by submission, and two by decision. He has earned two Performance of the Night bonuses during his UFC run.

Before his UFC career, Malott worked as a striking coach for Team Alpha Male. He cornered former UFC champion Cody Garbrandt and Hall of Famer Urijah Faber.

Malott’s only UFC loss came against Neil Magny, a fight where he gave away a big lead and was finished. That defeat remains a cautionary tale as he prepares for his first five-round main event.

DraftKings data shows Malott holds a 4-1 record in UFC fights held in Canada. His most recent knockout victory has helped establish him as a rising contender in the welterweight division.

The co-main event features a bantamweight bout between Kyler Phillips (+142) and Charles Jourdain (-170). Canadian fighters occupy spots on the top four main card fights, including Jasmine Jasudavicius, who faces Karine Silva in a women’s flyweight matchup.
