Former UFC welterweight contender Nick Diaz has spoken publicly about his recent stay at an involuntary rehabilitation facility in Mexico. The MMA veteran addressed the situation while confirming his plans to return to professional fighting.

Diaz explained how he ended up in the Mexico rehab facility, though he did not provide extensive details about the circumstances that led to the involuntary placement. The 41-year-old fighter has been out of competition since his return bout in 2021.

The Stockton native has had a long and turbulent career in mixed martial arts, competing in organizations including Strikeforce, Pride, and the UFC. He last fought against Robbie Lawler at UFC 266 in September 2021, losing by third-round TKO.

    Plans to Return to Competition

Despite the recent rehab stay, Diaz made clear that he intends to continue his fighting career. He expressed confidence in his ability to compete at the highest level of the sport.

“I see myself becoming world champion,” Diaz said when discussing his future plans. His statement indicates he has not given up on reaching the pinnacle of MMA success, despite never having won a UFC championship during his career.

Diaz came closest to UFC gold in 2013 when he challenged Georges St-Pierre for the welterweight title at UFC 158. He lost that bout by unanimous decision in what was one of the most anticipated fights of that year.

The fighter has dealt with various personal and professional challenges throughout his career. He has faced multiple suspensions from athletic commissions and has been open about his struggles outside the octagon.

    History in Mixed Martial Arts

Nick Diaz holds wins over several top-tier opponents during his career, including B.J. Penn, Paul Daley, and Robbie Lawler in their first meeting. His aggressive fighting style and willingness to engage in stand-up battles made him a fan favorite for years.

His brother Nate Diaz has also been a prominent figure in MMA, recently transitioning to boxing and other combat sports ventures. The Diaz brothers have maintained a loyal following throughout their careers.

Diaz has not fought since the 2021 loss to Lawler, which marked his return after a six-year absence from competition. That fight was considered a rematch of their 2004 bout, which Nick won by knockout.

The fighter’s rehabilitation stay in Mexico appears to be part of his personal journey as he works toward making another comeback. No timeline has been announced for when Diaz might return to active competition.

Diaz remains a licensed fighter and has not announced any formal retirement from the sport. His determination to pursue a world championship suggests he is planning to compete again in the near future.
