Ian Machado Garry’s wife Layla has publicly thanked UFC fighter Carlos Prates after he refused to participate in mocking her during a Q&A session at UFC 325. The incident occurred when a fan asked Prates an extremely inappropriate question about Layla during the event’s weigh-ins.

The fan asked Prates a vulgar question suggesting infidelity on Layla’s part. After hearing the translation of the question, Prates immediately shut down the attempt to get him to insult his rival’s wife.

    Prates Cites Cultural Values

“Where I come from, you can’t say bad things about somebody’s wife, they can literally kill you if you say something about the family,” Prates explained to the crowd. He added that while he and Garry are big rivals inside the cage, they maintain respect for each other outside of it.

The response drew cheers from the audience. Layla Garry later shared a clip of the moment on her Instagram account, expressing her gratitude to the Brazilian fighter.

“Thank you Carlos, this means the world to us,” Layla wrote in her post. “To stand on stage encouraged to humiliate and abuse, knowing the crowd may laugh and boost your ego but choosing to be moral and conscious and right. I respect that so so much.”

She continued by noting that such responses should be standard behavior but unfortunately are not common in MMA. “I thank you for setting a better standard and protecting me in this moment,” she added.

Layla also mentioned that her son Leo admires Prates. She emphasized that his voice carries more power than he might realize.

    Background on the Rivalry

Garry and Prates fought in April 2025, with Garry winning the bout and ending Prates’ unbeaten streak in the UFC. Leading up to that fight, Garry had called Prates a “quitter” as part of his pre-fight trash talk.

The Garrys have been frequent targets of online trolls and conspiracy theories about their relationship. These unfounded rumors often circulate on social media and MMA forums.

Prates, known as “The Nightmare” in the octagon, has built a reputation for his striking skills and knockout power. His decision to take the high road during the Q&A session contrasted with the often harsh nature of UFC promotion and fighter interactions.

Garry himself has not always maintained such boundaries in his own promotional tactics. He recently posted a video showing himself landing an oblique kick on former opponent Shavkat Rakhmonov, captioning it “Ian destroyed Shavkat’s career” after Rakhmonov announced another knee injury.

The UFC welterweight has also been known to dig up opponents’ mugshots and mention their children during pre-fight buildup. These tactics have led some fans and fighters to feel justified in directing personal attacks at Garry and his family.

Despite their competitive history and Garry’s sometimes controversial promotional methods, Prates chose to honor his cultural values about respecting families. His response has been widely shared across MMA social media platforms since the incident occurred on February 4, 2026.
