UFC CEO Dana White admitted he was too biased toward Bella Mir after she suffered one of the biggest upsets in MMA history on Tuesday night’s Contender Series.

Mir, the daughter of former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir, lost a unanimous decision to Alex Apodaca in the main event of Week 3. She entered the bout as a -4000 betting favorite, the biggest in Contender Series history and one of the largest in all of MMA.

All three judges scored the fight 29-28 for Apodaca, who earned a UFC contract with the victory. Mir went back to the drawing board with her first professional loss.

    White Takes Responsibility for Hype

“I was extremely biased coming into tonight,” White told reporters at the post-fight press conference. “I’ve been close to her for over four years.”

White revealed he personally guided Mir’s career path four years ago when she approached him about her future. He convinced her to attend college and develop a wrestling background before pursuing MMA professionally.

Mir is a 23-year-old NCAA national champion wrestler with just four professional fights on her record. The UFC previously sponsored her NIL deal in college and featured her in several UFC BJJ competitions.

White had previously called Mir a “one of one unicorn” and praised her stated goals to win championships in UFC, Zuffa Boxing, and submission grappling. The extreme hype created the massive betting line that made Mir one of the biggest favorites in combat sports history.

    Experience Gap Proves Decisive

White credited analyst Michael Bisping for correctly identifying the key factor in the fight. “Bisping absolutely nailed it and said the difference in this fight is deep water,” White said. “Bella’s never been there, and Alex has.”

Apodaca controlled most of the fight and accumulated damage on the feet against Mir. The loss exposed Mir’s lack of experience in competitive fights that go the distance.

White emphasized that Mir did not quit or get stopped, viewing the loss as a learning experience. “She didn’t fold, she didn’t get stopped, she didn’t quit,” he said. “This is all part of the game.”

He compared the situation to Jon Jones’ first competitive fight against Alexander Gustafsson, when the UFC star gained his first deep water experience. White said overcoming adversity is part of developing as a fighter.

“To come in and just go undefeated, it’s very hard to do in this sport,” White explained. “That’s why when it’s done — like when we always talk about Jon Jones. He’s undefeated.”

White also noted the absurd betting line created opportunities for experienced bettors to profit by betting against public money on Mir.

When asked if Mir might return to Contender Series later this season, White left the door open. “That’s up to her and her father,” he said. “That’s up to them.”

Contender Series returns next Tuesday with Week 4 of Season 10.
