Tai Tuivasa will return to the Octagon on Saturday night after an 18-month layoff, and the Australian heavyweight says the extended break has reignited his passion for fighting. He faces Tallison Teixeira at UFC 325 in Sydney, looking to earn his first victory in six fights.
Tuivasa’s hiatus lasted 532 days, during which he stepped away from competition following a difficult stretch in his career. The fan favorite has dropped five consecutive fights, prompting him to take time away from the sport.
The lengthy break gave Tuivasa time to refresh both his mind and body, according to multiple interviews this week. He told reporters that the time away helped him rediscover his motivation and love for mixed martial arts.
Missing the Competition and Preparation
Tuivasa said he missed several aspects of fighting during his time away. He specifically mentioned missing the hype, the challenge of competition, and the preparation process that comes with training for a fight.
The Australian power puncher also stated he missed the winning aspect of the sport most of all. After experiencing five straight defeats, Tuivasa expressed his readiness to get back to his winning ways in front of his home crowd.
Tuivasa told reporters he plans to focus on himself this year as he works to climb back up the heavyweight rankings. He vowed to show the division that he remains a relevant competitor despite his recent struggles.
The Sydney native expressed confidence that his time away has prepared him for this moment. He said he feels ready to compete and is eager to prove himself against Teixeira.
Teixeira Confident in Matchup
Teixeira arrives in Australia with an 8-1 record and confidence in his game plan. The Brazilian heavyweight told reporters through a translator on Wednesday that Tuivasa’s striking style fits directly into his strategy.
“He’s a great striker. He’s going to come to exchange punches with me. Fits right into my game,” Teixeira said during media day.
Both fighters are known for their punching power, setting up a potential slugfest for the Sydney crowd. Teixeira said he expects Tuivasa to be in the best shape and the best version of himself.
The Brazilian completed the lengthy journey from South America to Australia, a trip that requires more than 20 hours of flights. Teixeira said he arrived with plenty of time to adjust and prepare for the bout.
“I have nothing to complain. I feel great,” Teixeira told reporters. “I’m ready to go.”
Teixeira acknowledged he will be fighting in hostile territory against a beloved local fighter. However, he stated he can only worry about his own performance and is ready to showcase his skills in the Octagon.
UFC 325 takes place Saturday night in Sydney, with Tuivasa making his return after the longest layoff of his professional career. The heavyweight bout between Tuivasa and Teixeira is scheduled for the main card.
