Former UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones is pushing back against fans who continue to accuse him of using steroids throughout his fighting career. In a recent interview with ALF Global, the 39-year-old fighter defended his legacy against doping allegations.
“Never took steroids,” Jones said. “It was a supplement found in my body. It was proven to come from a supplement company that I was using.”
Jones has faced multiple drug test failures during his career as a fighter. His first positive test came before UFC 200 when he tested positive for Clomiphene and Letrozole. That test canceled a planned rematch with Daniel Cormier.
His second failed test occurred at UFC 214 after his victory over Cormier. Jones tested positive for Turinabol, and the result changed his win to a “No Contest.” He served a 15-month suspension following that test.

The Picogram Controversy
Jones also dealt with controversy before UFC 232 and UFC 235 when trace amounts of substances appeared in his system. The situation became known as the “picogram pulsing” issue.
The fighter explained that the amounts found in his body were extremely small. “The amount of this substance that was in my body was so small that it took very expensive scientists to be able to even find it,” Jones said.
He stressed that the supplement found in his system had no impact on his performance. “The supplement that was found in my body has zero performance-enhancing effects – zero. And that’s very well documented,” Jones stated.
Jones pointed to different explanations for each failed test during his career. For the UFC 200 test, he blamed gas station male enhancement pills. At UFC 214, he said it was a tainted supplement. The UFC 232 and UFC 235 situations involved what scientists called picogram pulsing.
Fan Reactions and Career Status
The former champion expressed frustration with fans who dismiss the scientific evidence. “For some reason, the fans ignore all that, and they’re like, ‘Something about steroids, he’s guilty,'” Jones said.
He also addressed what he sees as contradictory thinking from critics. “It’s funny because fighters are like, ‘Jon Jones is a knucklehead, but he’s brilliant enough to do steroids and trick the UFC’s scientists.’ It’s like, which one is it? Am I the knucklehead or the mad genius, who somehow got away with using steroids?” Jones asked.
Jones holds a record of 28-1 with one no contest in his MMA career. Many fans and experts consider him one of the greatest fighters in UFC history. He held titles at both light heavyweight (205 pounds) and heavyweight.
His last fight took place in November 2024 when he defeated Stipe Miocic by third-round TKO to retain the UFC heavyweight championship. Jones announced his retirement in June 2025 but later expressed interest in competing at UFC Freedom 250, which did not work out.
Jones remains under contract with UFC. He currently has no immediate plans to return to competition.
