Ian Machado Garry will challenge Islam Makhachev for the UFC welterweight championship Saturday at UFC 330 in Philadelphia. Makhachev will make his first defense of the welterweight belt after capturing it from Jack Della Maddalena.

Makhachev enters the bout with a 28-1 record and holds the number one pound-for-pound ranking in the UFC. The Dagestan fighter is currently riding a win streak that matches the record set by Anderson Silva.

Garry comes into his first title opportunity with a 17-1 record and 10 wins in the UFC. The Irish fighter said he knew from age 16 that he would one day compete for UFC gold.

    Classic Matchup of Styles

Garry described the fight as the most elite version of striker versus grappler in modern MMA. He said Makhachev must get the fight to the ground while he needs to keep it standing.

“He has to get me down. I have to keep it on the feet,” Garry told reporters Wednesday. “However, it’s the most elite of both of those worlds.”

Garry acknowledged that Makhachev can strike effectively, pointing to his performance against Della Maddalena. The Irish fighter said both men are well-rounded, making this one of the most complete matchups the UFC has seen.

Makhachev said he likes Garry as a fighter but thinks he talks too much. The champion told media members he plans to humble the Irish challenger on Saturday night.

Garry rejected any suggestion that fight week would include trash talk. He said both fighters have history to make and don’t need negativity.

    History on the Line

A win for Makhachev would break the UFC record for longest consecutive win streak. The champion has already established himself as arguably the greatest lightweight champion in UFC history and now holds titles in two weight classes.

Garry said beating the number one pound-for-pound fighter would prove he’s truly the best on the planet. A victory would also make him the most successful Irish fighter in UFC history, breaking Conor McGregor’s win record.

Garry told reporters he has always fought the toughest competition to leave no question marks. He said his talent, discipline and hard work guaranteed he would reach this point.

The Irish fighter predicted a knockout victory and said he plans to make it emphatic. UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier said that mindset could be a mistake against Makhachev’s grappling.

Joe Rogan recently said he wouldn’t be surprised if Makhachev retires after Saturday’s fight. Makhachev has not publicly addressed his future plans beyond UFC 330.

Garry said Carlos Prates deserves the next title shot and would receive one if he defeats Makhachev. Garry previously defeated Prates in April 2025.

Makhachev won the welterweight title after a dominant reign at lightweight. His move to 170 pounds earned him champion status in two divisions.
