Dublin fighter Adam Darby has become the first Irish athlete to earn a UFC contract through Dana White’s Contender Series after defeating Patrick Rivera on September 1 in Las Vegas. The welterweight contest ended in a third-round doctor stoppage due to the damage Rivera had sustained.

Darby controlled the fight from the opening bell. The referee stopped the bout after determining Rivera could no longer safely continue.

Ten Years of Training Pays Off

The 8-1 fighter described the moment the fight was waved off as the culmination of more than a decade of work. “I was just sitting there thinking to myself, well, that’s 10-plus years of work all coming to fruition,” Darby told BBC Sport NI.

Darby actually wanted the fight to continue. He told the referee not to stop it because he was looking for a more emphatic finish to showcase his skills.

“I was saying to the referee, ‘Don’t stop it, he’s good, he’s good’, I knew he was done, but I wanted a highlight-reel finish,” Darby said. “The ref recognised the damage he was taking and pulled the plug on it.”

Crazy story here from Team Ryano’s Adam Darby about being accosted at knifepoint while out for a run 🤯🔪

The Team Ryano fighter’s path to the UFC included several major obstacles. He suffered a 20-second professional defeat to Mush Aslani early in his career.

That loss could have ended many fighters’ dreams. Darby used it as motivation to improve his training and skills.

    Overcoming Serious Injury

A serious hand injury later threatened to derail Darby’s career completely. He broke his hand and finger, requiring multiple surgeries that kept him out of competition for 17 months.

Darby returned from the lengthy layoff and rebuilt his career one fight at a time. He is now riding a seven-fight winning streak heading into his UFC debut.

The Dublin native’s commitment to reaching the UFC was evident years before his Contender Series victory. In 2018, Darby wrote a message that he shared after earning his contract: “One life, one chance, UFC or nothing.”

He stressed that visualization alone wasn’t enough to achieve his goals. “Visualisation is very important, but you can’t sit in your bedroom looking in the mirror saying, ‘I’m the best of the best,’ and not training and backing it up,” Darby explained.

Darby’s father first enrolled him in kickboxing classes when he was young. He later discovered mixed martial arts and committed himself fully to the sport.

The fighter hopes his success will inspire other young Irish athletes to pursue careers in MMA. He wants to show them that reaching the UFC is possible despite setbacks and injuries.

Darby is currently waiting for the UFC to schedule his official promotional debut. He hopes to make his first appearance inside the octagon before the end of 2026.
