Colby Covington plans to return to action in early 2026 after nearly a year away from the octagon. The welterweight fighter last competed in December 2024, losing to Joaquin Buckley by doctor’s stoppage TKO.
Covington wants his next fight to happen in January or February. He told The Schmo that discussions are underway with the UFC to find a suitable opponent. The 17-5 fighter aims to be more active than he has been in recent years.
Since 2020, Covington has only fought once annually. He hopes to change that pattern in 2026. His plan includes two fights during the year.
The former interim welterweight champion wants to compete at the UFC White House event next summer. However, he doesn’t want to wait that long for his first bout. Covington views an early 2026 fight as a warm-up before the White House card.
Covington’s ranking has changed after his loss to Buckley. He now sits outside the UFC’s top 10 welterweight rankings. This marks the first time in years he has been ranked outside the top tier.
Potential Opponents on Covington’s Radar
With his new ranking position, Covington has shifted focus to veteran fighters in the division. He mentioned several names as potential opponents during his interview. Gilbert Burns stands out as one option that makes sense for both fighters.
Stephen Thompson, known as “Wonderboy,” is another name on Covington’s list. Both Burns and Thompson are experienced welterweights who could provide competitive matchups. These fights would be more realistic options given Covington’s current ranking.
Nate Diaz is also on Covington’s wish list. Covington said a fight with Diaz would be fun. However, Diaz is not currently under UFC contract.
Diaz’s Return Remains Uncertain
Diaz has competed in boxing matches outside the UFC since his departure. He has stated he is open to offers if the situation fits his interests. While Diaz once promised to return to the UFC, he recently admitted he lacks excitement about facing current roster fighters.
Covington specifically mentioned he wants to see Nick Diaz get healthy. He focused his interest on Nate Diaz instead. Many observers believe Nate Diaz would only return to UFC for a trilogy fight with Conor McGregor.
Covington emphasized he wants big fights with legends of the sport. His opponent list reflects this goal. All the fighters he mentioned have established names in mixed martial arts.
The UFC has not announced any official matchups for Covington yet. His team continues working with the promotion to find the right opponent. Covington remains hopeful a fight will materialize in the first two months of 2026.
