Former UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria has opened up about losing his undefeated record to Justin Gaethje five months ago. The 27-year-old fighter called the defeat the worst moment of his fighting career in his first major interview since the loss.
Topuria lost his UFC lightweight title debut to Gaethje in June at a special UFC event held at the White House. The fight took place on the South Lawn in front of millions of viewers, marking the first defeat of his mixed martial arts career.
“I’ve been in the worst situation a fighter can possibly be in,” Topuria told MMAmania this week. “I’ve experienced the worst day of my profession. What’s worse than that? Dying.”

Mental Struggles After Public Defeat
The Georgian-Spanish fighter revealed he still struggles to accept the loss as part of his identity. He described looking at himself in the mirror each morning and rejecting what happened.
“I wake up in the morning and look at myself in the mirror, and I’m like: no, no, no, no, this isn’t me,” Topuria said in the interview.
The defeat marked Topuria’s first test at lightweight against a top-tier opponent. He had moved up from featherweight, where he held the championship belt after knocking out Alexander Volkanovski.
Topuria had built a reputation as one of the sport’s most confident finishers before the Gaethje fight. The loss on such a public stage, at a White House event, added extra weight to the defeat.
Return Scheduled for Early 2027
UFC president Dana White confirmed last month that Topuria will return to the octagon in early 2027. No specific opponent or fight date has been announced yet.
Topuria made clear he has not lost his competitive drive despite the setback. He insisted the loss has not broken his resolve or changed how he views himself as a fighter.
The former champion is expected to resume training camp before the end of this year. At 27 years old, he still has time to rebuild his career and potentially reclaim a title.
Topuria’s comments suggest he remains mentally prepared to compete at the highest level. He framed the experience as the worst professional moment possible, but not something that would end his career.
