Roman Kopylov pulled off a major upset at UFC 332 on Saturday night, stopping heavily favored middleweight prospect Ateba Gautier with a first-round TKO. The fight took place at Delta Center in Salt Lake City and opened the main card.

Kopylov entered the octagon as a sizeable underdog against Gautier, who had been fast-tracked toward the top 15 rankings based on his knockout power. The Cameroon fighter was expected to add another quick finish to his resume.

Instead, the Russian veteran controlled the action from the opening bell. Kopylov stayed technical and disciplined, landing clean straight left hands that gave Gautier problems throughout the brief contest.

    The Finishing Sequence

The end came at 3:12 of the first round when Kopylov landed another straight left that sent Gautier wobbling to the canvas. Kopylov immediately followed his opponent to the ground and hammered away with punches until the referee stopped the fight.

“Honestly, I think I’m dreaming,” Kopylov said afterward, according to MMA Fighting. “That straight [punch] is what changed entire course of the fight.”

Kopylov used his jab and kicks to control the distance before landing the decisive blow. He never put himself in serious danger during the short fight.

Gautier had trouble dealing with Kopylov’s technical approach. The prospect failed to land the early knockout power that made him a betting favorite going into the bout.

What This Means for Both Fighters

The victory marks one of the best results of Kopylov’s UFC career. The Russian fighter proved he could compete with rising contenders in the middleweight division.

For Gautier, the loss represents his first major setback at 185 pounds. He had been building momentum toward a ranked matchup before running into Kopylov’s left hand.

Kopylov’s game plan was simple but effective. He maintained his range and picked his shots carefully rather than engaging in a wild brawl.

Gautier will need to regroup after the disappointing performance. His quick rise up the middleweight rankings has hit its first speed bump.

The straight left hand proved to be the key weapon for Kopylov throughout the fight. He landed it multiple times before the final shot that ended the contest.

Kopylov’s technical boxing allowed him to neutralize Gautier’s power. The Russian never gave the prospect a chance to land his dangerous strikes.

The fight showed that Gautier still has areas to work on despite his earlier success. His inability to adjust to Kopylov’s technical approach cost him the fight.

Kopylov’s performance demonstrated the value of experience at the UFC level. He stayed calm and executed his game plan perfectly against a dangerous opponent.

The upset victory at UFC 332 opened the main card with an exciting finish. Kopylov’s straight left hand dropped Gautier at 3:12 of the first round for the TKO stoppage.
