Tom Aspinall has vacated the UFC heavyweight championship after nearly a year of struggling to recover from serious eye injuries. The 33-year-old British fighter last competed in October 2025 when his title defense against Ciryl Gane ended in a no contest.
During that fight at UFC 321, Aspinall was poked in both eyes at the same time late in the first round. He was unable to continue, bringing a premature end to what was supposed to be his first title defense.
What initially appeared to be a temporary setback has turned into a career-threatening situation. Aspinall has undergone multiple surgeries over the past year to address ongoing complications with his eyes.
Training Accident Sets Back Recovery
Aspinall had made progress in his recovery and even returned to training after double eye surgery. The UFC reportedly targeted a rematch with Gane for UFC 334 at Madison Square Garden.

However, one of Aspinall’s eyes suffered major damage during a recent training session. This accident essentially reset his entire recovery process and forced him to give up the heavyweight belt.
“Ongoing eye complications mean I cannot get cleared to fight right now,” Aspinall said in his statement. “I’ve had multiple surgeries, accidents and infections, and done everything possible to get back to competing.”
The former champion explained that he followed UFC advice and focused on recovery while trying to return. “I have now made the decision to vacate the heavyweight title,” he added. “I don’t want to hold the heavyweight division up.”
Aspinall became champion when Jon Jones retired and vacated the title. Now he finds himself in a similar position, stepping aside to let other fighters compete.
UFC Legend Offers Support
Randy Couture, a former UFC heavyweight champion, expressed sympathy for Aspinall’s situation. Couture suffered a similar injury when he fractured his orbital bone against Ricco Rodriguez.
“It took me six months to recover from that,” Couture said. The Hall of Famer acknowledged that eye injuries are among the worst setbacks a fighter can face.
Couture met Aspinall several years ago at a fan expo in Manchester before the British fighter’s title run. “What a nice guy,” Couture recalled. “Great guy; enjoyed being around him.”
The UFC legend even extended an offer to Aspinall. “I hope he recovers well, and I hope he gets back in there somewhere,” Couture said. “Maybe it’ll be here [in Ki MMA].”
Aspinall has also announced he is putting his podcast on hiatus to focus entirely on recovery. “I’ve really enjoyed it, but moving forward, I don’t think I’ll have enough time to focus on podcasting for now,” he explained on his YouTube channel.
The fighter made clear his priorities moving forward. “For right now, I’m just focusing on getting back to fighting. That’s my focus, that’s what I wanna do,” he said.
Ciryl Gane currently holds the interim heavyweight belt after knocking out Alex Pereira at UFC Freedom 250 in June. The UFC has not yet made a formal announcement about promoting Gane to undisputed champion or setting up the next heavyweight title fight.
According to reporter Ariel Helwani, the current hope is that Aspinall might be able to return to competition in early 2027. However, no timeline has been confirmed, and questions remain about whether he will ever fight again.
