Justin Gaethje has revealed the technical weakness he exploited to defeat Ilia Topuria and capture the UFC lightweight championship at UFC Freedom 250. The new champion forced a corner stoppage after weathering a tough second round.

Gaethje appeared on the MightyCast podcast with UFC Hall of Famer Demetrious Johnson to break down his victory. He explained the specific flaw his team identified during training camp.

    The Rhythm That Never Changed

“I guess the best explanation for you to understand is his feet never change rhythm,” Gaethje said. “He never changes rhythm with his feet.”

The champion described how Topuria’s movement was limited to forward and backward motion without lateral movement. This created a predictable pattern that Gaethje and his team could exploit.

“It’s forwards or backwards,” Gaethje explained. “So, ultimately, it’s about timing his feet and interrupting.”

Gaethje said the entire strategy revolved around disrupting that constant rhythm. “The game plan was to interrupt his feet, especially when it’s so constant,” he told Johnson.

The fight took place at a historic UFC event held at the White House in June 2026. Topuria entered the bout with an undefeated record but lost by technical knockout.

    Mental Preparation Issues

Beyond the technical aspects, Gaethje believes Topuria made emotional mistakes in his preparation. He suggested the Georgian fighter was overconfident about the fight’s duration.

“Those are emotional mistakes in preparation,” Gaethje said. “So, he wasn’t prepared for what happened that night.”

Gaethje added that Topuria’s expectations worked against him once the fight extended beyond the early rounds. “And that’s his fault, because he didn’t think that it was possible for someone to be there with him for that long,” the champion stated.

The loss marked Topuria’s first career defeat and ended his winning streak. It was described as one of the toughest tests of his UFC career.

UFC CEO Dana White recently commented on Topuria’s status and potential return. “Topuria is ready to fight, and we are looking forward to his return,” White said.

White mentioned two possible opponents for Topuria’s next bout. He said a rematch with Gaethje would be “a great fight” and called a potential matchup with Paddy Pimblett “a fantastic clash.”

UFC play-by-play broadcaster Jon Anik has hinted that matchmakers are seriously considering a rematch between Gaethje and Topuria. However, Gaethje is currently expected to defend his title against the winner of the upcoming fight between Arman Tsarukyan and Mauricio Ruffy.

Topuria has not made an official statement about his preferred next opponent. White’s comments suggest the UFC is open to either the Gaethje rematch or a high-profile bout with Pimblett.

Pimblett has become one of the UFC’s most popular fighters due to his unique style and large fan base. A fight between him and Topuria would likely generate strong media interest.

The timeline for Topuria’s return to the octagon remains unclear. White confirmed the fighter is ready to compete but no official announcement has been made regarding his next bout.
