Ian Garry confronted Michael Morales backstage at UFC 330 in Philadelphia after losing his welterweight title fight to Islam Makhachev. The encounter was captured on video and quickly spread across social media.
Garry, who lost to Makhachev by unanimous decision on Saturday night, approached Morales to address recent trash talk between the two fighters. Morales was serving as the official backup fighter for the main event.
“All the sh*t you talk, it’s OK. Make sure you back it up,” Garry told Morales in the backstage area. “I don’t know whatever story you made up about meeting me; I’ve never encountered that sort, you know that, right?”
Morales remained mostly silent during the exchange, barely responding to Garry’s comments. The undefeated Ecuadorian fighter had previously told Full Violence that he doesn’t like Garry because “he talks too much.”
Recent Feud Between Welterweight Contenders
The tension between the two fighters stems from an alleged altercation at the UFC Performance Institute involving Garry and one of Morales’s teammates. Morales later claimed that Garry had already left the facility by the time he arrived to support his friend.

In a previous interview, Morales was asked if there was anyone in the welterweight division he doesn’t like. He immediately named Ian Garry and flipped him off on camera.
Despite the confrontation, Garry praised Morales’s fighting abilities during their backstage encounter. “Listen, you’re a good fighter. Show up, keep winning, and you can do anything,” Garry said.
Garry encouraged Morales to focus on fighting rather than talking. “You’ve got massive fights in this division. You’ve got me, you’ve got Carlos Prates, you’ve got Islam. Show up and fight.”
Garry Urges New Generation to Avoid Trash Talk
The Irish fighter called on younger fighters to change the culture of the sport. “There are too many people in this sport talking sh*t, being negative. We’re the new generation of the sport; change it,” Garry said.
Garry continued to praise Morales while delivering his message. “You’re an animal. You’re strong. I don’t know about any story where I’ve met you and I’ve talked sh*t to you,” he said.
The 30-year-old Irishman emphasized that respect comes from performance, not words. “You knock people out, you beat people up, that’s what gets respect,” Garry told Morales.
Morales holds a perfect 19-0 professional record, with a 7-0 mark in the UFC. His last fight was a first-round TKO victory over Sean Brady at UFC 322 in November.
Garry’s record now stands at 17-2 after the loss to Makhachev. He gave the champion a tough test in the main event at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
Morales is considered a top contender for the next welterweight title shot. However, Makhachev has stated that Carlos Prates may be the most deserving challenger for the 170-pound belt.
Morales weighed in as the backup fighter for UFC 330 but his services were not needed. The 27-year-old is now waiting to see who he will fight next as he pursues his first UFC championship opportunity.
