Diego Lopes knocked out Steve Garcia in the second round at UFC Freedom 250 on Sunday, opening the historic White House event with a violent finish. The Brazilian fighter landed a left hook that dropped Garcia before finishing with ground strikes at 2:42 of round two.
The fight took place on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington as part of the UFC’s Freedom 250 event celebrating 250 years of America. Referee Mike Beltran stopped the contest after Lopes landed multiple hammer fists on an unconscious Garcia.
The event experienced a brief delay due to weather concerns before getting underway. UFC President Dana White hosted the one-of-a-kind show in front of military members and the Trump family, with the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and Air Force Thunderbirds performing an 11-jet flyover before the fights began.

Garcia Controls Early Action
Garcia entered the fight with a seven-fight winning streak and looked sharp in the opening round. The 34-year-old American landed clean shots from his southpaw stance, attacking Lopes’ lead leg with kicks while mixing in straight lefts and even a question mark kick to the head.
Garcia buckled Lopes’ legs with a straight left hand early in the second round. He continued his success from round one, appearing comfortable despite the unique venue and mainstream media attention.
Lopes struggled to find his rhythm in the first five minutes. The Brazilian absorbed leg kicks that caused visible swelling on his calf and faced the cleaner striking from Garcia throughout the opener.
Lopes Finds Fight-Ending Shot
The fight changed dramatically midway through round two when both fighters engaged in a wild exchange. Garcia made what would be his only critical mistake by standing and trading punches with the experienced Brazilian.
Lopes landed a crushing left hook after absorbing a right hand to the face. Garcia dropped to a knee but got back up to continue fighting before Lopes landed another right hand followed by the finishing left that put him down for good.
The Brazilian immediately pounced on Garcia and landed heavy ground strikes. Garcia was unconscious as Lopes continued landing hammer fists before Beltran intervened to stop the bout.
“It just happened,” Lopes said after the fight. “I know Steve is dangerous in the first round and I took it easy. Nobody can beat me. If you come to the middle of the cage, try it.”
Lopes improved his record to 28-8 overall and 7-3 in the UFC. His only recent losses came against featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski in two title fights. He has defeated fighters including Dan Ige and Brian Ortega during his UFC run.
Garcia fell to 19-6 overall and 8-3 in the UFC. His winning streak, which included victories over Calvin Kattar and David Onama, ended with the knockout loss.
Bruce Buffer announced the result wearing a customized star-spangled suit. Lopes became the first fighter in history to win a professional MMA fight on the grounds of the White House.
The bout was the opening fight of a seven-fight card that also featured Justin Gaethje winning the lightweight title and Ciryl Gane capturing interim heavyweight gold. Each fight earned a potential $400,000 bonus for Fight of the Night honors.
