Juan Diaz made a successful UFC debut Saturday night at UFC Vegas 117, submitting Malcolm Wellmaker with a rear-naked choke in the second round. The Mexican lightweight prospect forced the tap at the Apex in Las Vegas on the Allen vs. Costa card.

Wellmaker came out aggressively in the opening round, putting early pressure on the newcomer. But Diaz showed composure under fire and weathered the initial storm.

Diaz Takes Control on the Ground

Once on the mat, Diaz’s advantage became clear to observers and commentators. He methodically worked to secure back control on Wellmaker.

Diaz locked in a rear-naked choke and left Wellmaker no choice but to tap. The submission ended the fight in the second round, giving Diaz his first Octagon victory.

The win drew praise from UFC commentators who called attention to Diaz’s patience and technical ability. Fans in attendance and watching on Paramount+ also reacted positively to the debut performance.

    Wellmaker’s Momentum Halted

The loss stopped Malcolm Wellmaker’s recent run in the lightweight division. Wellmaker had entered the fight looking to build on previous performances.

Instead, he became the victim of a strong debut from the Mexican prospect. The aggressive start from Wellmaker proved not enough once Diaz established his grappling game.

Diaz’s nickname “Sticky” appeared fitting given how he controlled Wellmaker once the fight hit the mat. His ability to secure and maintain position led directly to the finish.

The rear-naked choke is one of the most common submissions in mixed martial arts. It involves wrapping one arm around an opponent’s neck from behind while using the other arm to secure the hold.

When properly applied, the choke cuts off blood flow to the brain and forces a quick tap or renders the opponent unconscious. Wellmaker chose to tap rather than risk going out.

Diaz immediately announced himself as a new threat in the lightweight division with the victory. The 155-pound weight class is one of the deepest and most competitive in the UFC.

The performance suggested Diaz possesses the grappling skills to compete at the highest level. His composure under early pressure also demonstrated mental toughness.

The fight took place at the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas. UFC Vegas 117 was headlined by a bout between Allen and Costa.

Diaz improved his professional record with the victory. Wellmaker suffered a setback in his UFC journey with the second-round submission loss.
