Two-division UFC champion Alex Pereira has informed the promotion that he intends to vacate his light heavyweight title to move up to the heavyweight division, according to a report from MMA journalist Rueben Carter. The announcement is expected to come before the end of January 2026.
Carter shared the news on X (formerly Twitter) on January 14, stating that Pereira has made his decision and an official announcement will follow soon. Carter previously broke the news about Israel Adesanya’s return fight against Joe Pyfer at UFC Seattle, lending credibility to this latest report.
Pereira currently holds the light heavyweight championship at 205 pounds. He most recently defended his title with a knockout victory over Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 320, avenging an earlier loss in that fight.
After the Ankalaev victory, Pereira called out heavyweight champion Jon Jones multiple times for a superfight. He specifically mentioned wanting to face Jones at a potential White House event.
UFC Policy Requires Title Vacation for Division Changes
The UFC has recently required fighters to vacate their titles before moving to different weight classes to chase double-champion status. Both Ilia Topuria and Islam Makhachev had to give up their belts last year when pursuing fights in other divisions.

If Pereira follows through with the move, he would become the first fighter to compete in three different UFC weight classes after already holding titles. The Brazilian striker previously competed at middleweight before moving to light heavyweight.
With the light heavyweight title potentially becoming vacant, Jiri Prochazka versus Carlos Ulberg could realistically fight for the undisputed championship. Both fighters are top contenders in the division.
Ciryl Gane Emerges as Likely First Opponent
The most realistic opponent for Pereira’s heavyweight debut appears to be Ciryl Gane for an interim heavyweight title. This matchup gained traction after Jon Jones claimed that UFC President Dana White does not want him to fight Pereira at the White House event.
The heavyweight division has struggled recently with limited activity at the top of the rankings. Pereira’s move could bring fresh energy to the weight class.
Khamzat Chimaev has also called out Pereira for a potential White House fight. Chimaev wrote on social media, “Let’s go White House. Don’t worry, I will finish you fast.”
However, a fight between Chimaev and Pereira appears unlikely at this time. Chimaev currently holds the middleweight title and has not yet defended his belt.
Pereira and Chimaev have traded verbal shots since they both competed at middleweight. The rivalry continued even after Pereira moved up to light heavyweight.
Fans have speculated about other potential heavyweight matchups for Pereira, including a fight against Derrick Lewis. No official confirmation has been provided by the UFC regarding Pereira’s specific heavyweight debut opponent.
The UFC has not yet commented publicly on the report about Pereira’s plans. Pereira himself has not made an official statement confirming the news as of January 14, 2026.
