    TLDR

    • Tapology briefly changed Michael Morales’ record from 19-0 to 20-1 after finding 2017 reality show footage
    • The database counted a loss from Ecuador’s ‘Ultima Pelea’ show, similar to The Ultimate Fighter format
    • Following fan backlash and clarification, Tapology reclassified the bout as an exhibition fight
    • The company apologized for applying current standards to a 2017 event that would have been classified differently at the time
    • Morales remains undefeated at 19-0 and is considered a top contender for a welterweight title shot

UFC welterweight contender Michael Morales has his undefeated record back after MMA database Tapology reversed a controversial decision made earlier this week.

Tapology initially changed the 26-year-old Ecuadorian fighter’s record from 19-0 to 20-1 on Tuesday morning. The change came after the company discovered footage from a 2017 Latin American reality show called ‘Ultima Pelea’ that showed Morales losing one fight and winning another.

The decision sparked immediate backlash from fans and from Morales himself, who issued what sources described as a “fiery response” to the change.

    Database Explains Reversal Decision

Tapology announced the reversal on social media platform X, acknowledging the mistake and reclassifying the fights as exhibitions. The company explained that it adds hundreds of fights daily to its database and tries to evaluate them consistently.

“We will reverse and classify these as exhibition,” Tapology posted. “We look forward to many colorful replies on social media about how stupid we are. Thank you in advance.”

The database said it has become more strict about exhibition fights in recent years. According to Tapology, some fighters and leagues use exhibition status as a loophole to keep legitimate fights off their official records.

“For the last several years we have been very restrictive about allowing fighters or leagues to claim exhibition status,” the company stated. “It allows fighters to compete in otherwise professional bouts without it counting.”

Tapology applied its current standards when reviewing the ‘Ultima Pelea’ footage. The show format is similar to The Ultimate Fighter, the UFC’s reality competition series where fighters compete for contracts.

Applying Wrong Standards to Old Event

The company admitted its core mistake was using modern criteria for an older event. “What’s not fair and not consistent is that we are applying a roughly 2023-forward framework to a 2017 event,” Tapology explained.

If the event had been reported in 2017, the company said it would have accepted the fights as exhibitions at that time. “This is the crux of how we agree we were incorrect when we classified these yesterday,” the statement read.

Tapology issued an apology for what it called “the sh*t storm.” The company thanked users for their feedback, though it noted some responses were more helpful than others.

Sherdog, another major MMA record-keeping database, never changed Morales’ record during the controversy.

Morales does not currently have a fight booked. He last competed at UFC 322 in New York, where he defeated top welterweight contender Sean Brady by knockout.

The Ecuadorian fighter is now considered one of the top contenders for a shot at the welterweight championship. Current welterweight champion Islam Makhachev holds the title, and Morales’ undefeated record keeps him in position for a potential title fight in the coming months.
