UFC 279 Fight Card: Nate Diaz vs. Tony Ferguson schedule

    Jake NicholsBy Jake NicholsSeptember 3, 2022Updated:September 9, 2022No Comments3 Mins Read
    Nate Diaz - UFC 279

One of the UFC’s most popular fighters will make their return at UFC 279 on Saturday, Sept. 10.

The UFC 279 fight card has been updated. Nate Diaz will now fight Tony Ferguson in the main event. Khamzat Chimaev will now fight Kevin Holland in a five-round co-main event.

Nate Diaz will step into the cage as a betting underdog for the ninth consecutive fight when he faces fast-rising Khamzat Chimaev in the main event of UFC 279 in Las Vegas.

Chimaev, a standout welterweight, has looked near-unstoppable for the majority of his UFC career to date. The 28-year-old managed four stoppage wins in his first four fights before he took a significant step up in the rankings to face Gilbert Burns in April. It was a grueling back-and-forth fight, but Chimaev managed to win by unanimous decision after three rounds. The performance was enough to nab the #3 spot in the UFC welterweight rankings.

Diaz most recently lost to current champion Leon Edwards in June last year and before then, Jorge Masvidal in 2019. He was outclassed for the majority of the bout with Edwards but nearly stole the show when he rocked Edwards with a straight left hand in the final minute of the fight. Diaz will be up against the odds again at UFC 279, but he’s certainly a fighter that you can never count out.

The UFC 279 fight card will also see Tony Ferguson return to action following his defeat to Michael Chandler in May. It marked four straight defeats for “El Cucuy,” who had before then managed an ultra-impressive 12-fight win streak in the lightweight division. For this fight, he’ll be moving up to welterweight to fight Li Jingliang in what should be a fantastic and very competitive clash.

The UFC 279 PPV main card will start at the standard time of 10:00 pm ET (7:00 pm PT). The only way to watch every fight live on Saturday night is by purchasing the official UFC 279 PPV on the ESPN+ website.
