Gregory Foster earned a UFC contract Tuesday night after defeating Jason Asher by unanimous decision at Dana White’s Contender Series in Las Vegas. The 34-year-old lightweight fighter dedicated the victory to his mother, who watched from her hospital bed on her birthday.
Foster improved his record to 9-1 with the win over Asher, who fell to 5-1. All three judges scored the fight 29-28 in Foster’s favor after three competitive rounds at Meta Apex.

The opening round featured dramatic exchanges as both fighters scored knockdowns. Foster dropped Asher with a right hand early in the round. Asher responded moments later with a spinning backfist that put Foster on the canvas.
The second round remained competitive with both fighters landing strikes. In the third round, Asher secured a takedown and landed ground strikes that opened a cut above Foster’s right eye.
Mother Watched from Hospital After Car Accident
Despite the difficult final round, Foster won the decision and revealed his mother Barbara was watching from the hospital. He told reporters she was recovering from a “really bad” car accident.
“Super happy, very proud of myself, very proud of my team,” Foster said in his postfight interview. “And I knew I was gonna come here and put on a f*cking show.”
The victory held special meaning because his mother was watching on her birthday while hospitalized. Foster’s emotional dedication caught the attention of UFC CEO Dana White during the contract announcement.
Dana White Awards Contract Despite Age Concerns
White wished Foster’s mother well while awarding him a UFC contract. “Greg, happy birthday to Barbara and hope she gets well soon,” White said.
The UFC CEO praised Foster’s performance and expressed unusual enthusiasm for signing an older fighter. “The pace you set tonight, the shots you landed, the shots you took, you opened the show the way I love the show to be opened,” White said.
White added that he had never been this excited to see a 34-year-old enter the UFC. The age comment referenced the reality that most fighters join the promotion in their twenties.
Foster was one of four fighters to receive contracts on the final episode of Contender Series Season 10. The event featured five fights across different weight classes.
The main event saw former K-1 kickboxer Ilias Bulaid lose to LFA Featherweight champion Erick Visconde by unanimous decision. Former ONE Muay Thai champion Smilla Sundell defeated Aline Pereira, sister of UFC star Alex Pereira, by unanimous decision.
Brazilian welterweight Luis Francischinelli stopped Will Rentz with a first-round TKO. Douglas da Lapa earned a third-round TKO victory over Davi Cabral in another Brazilian matchup.
Foster’s victory opened the card and set the tone for the evening. His combination of technical striking, durability, and emotional backstory impressed White and the judging panel.
The lightweight fighter will now prepare for his UFC debut. His first opponent and fight date have not been announced by the promotion.
