Brazilian bantamweight Raoni Barcelos remains hospitalized but is conscious and responsive after suddenly losing consciousness during his UFC Vegas 121 fight on Saturday night. The 39-year-old collapsed during a clinch exchange in the fifth round of his main event bout against 21-year-old Raul Rosas Jr.
UFC medical staff immediately checked for a pulse before Barcelos was stretchered out of the Meta APEX arena in Las Vegas. He was transported to a Level 1 trauma center where he underwent a CT scan and comprehensive medical assessment.

The UFC confirmed that Barcelos was “stable, alert and responsive, with full movement” following his evaluation. His head coach Davi Ramos provided reassurance on social media shortly after the incident.

“Raoni is fine. Everything is alright. Everyone can stay calm,” Ramos said on Saturday. He later added that Barcelos “has all his senses, he’s moving his leg, his arm, his hand, he’s conscious, he’s talking, everything is fine with him.”
Veteran MMA reporter Ariel Helwani offered additional details on Sunday evening. “He’s able to talk. He’s very conscious and lucid, I’m told,” Helwani tweeted. “He’s able to walk and eat, as well.”
Dr. Gustavo Medeiros, Barcelos’ physician, confirmed the fighter would remain under observation as a precautionary measure. “He is lucid and oriented at this moment, and he is hospitalized strictly as a matter of protocol,” Medeiros explained. “He needs to remain under observation for a few days to assess his condition and make sure that everything remains stable and that he continues to do well.”
The cause of Barcelos’ collapse has not yet been determined. Medical experts watching the broadcast ruled out cardiac arrest since no CPR was performed at the scene.
Fighter Was Winning Before Collapse
The incident made the ending even more shocking because Barcelos was ahead on all three judges’ scorecards entering the final round. One judge had awarded him a 10-8 score in the fourth round after he took Rosas’ back and locked in a rear-naked choke.
Barcelos was less than four minutes away from what would have been his sixth consecutive UFC victory. The Brazilian veteran had been riding a five-fight winning streak, including a victory over Montel Jackson in April 2026.
Rosas Jr. came into the fifth round needing a finish after falling behind on the scorecards. He started the round with explosive energy, landing a jumping knee and sharp combinations before the clinch exchange that ended with Barcelos going limp.
Referee Herb Dean stopped the contest at 1:38 of Round 5, awarding Rosas the TKO victory in his first UFC main event. Both fighters received the $100,000 Fight of the Night bonus for their intense back-and-forth battle.
Rosas, now 13-1 in his professional career, immediately asked the crowd to pray for his opponent during his post-fight interview. “It takes two to tango,” the 21-year-old from Clovis, New Mexico said.
Coach Ramos acknowledged the unpredictable nature of combat sports following the incident. “We had a great fight,” Ramos said. “We practice a sport that we can’t predict, unfortunately, but we know for sure that we were doing our best.”
