Former UFC champion Henry Cejudo has weighed in on a potential matchup between lightweight champion Islam Makhachev and former welterweight king Kamaru Usman. Cejudo argues that Usman would create serious problems for the dominant Dagestani fighter.
Cejudo labels Usman as a “nightmare” matchup for Makhachev due to several key factors. The former two-division champion points to Usman’s wrestling pedigree, physical size advantage, and relentless pressure as elements that could neutralize Makhachev’s typical dominance.
According to Cejudo, Usman’s defensive wrestling skills would allow him to stop Makhachev’s takedowns and force a striking-heavy fight. This would make the bout far more competitive than many fans might expect.
The comments from Cejudo come as speculation grows about Makhachev’s next opponent. Current welterweight champion Belal Muhammad recently shared his views on the potential matchup during an interview.
Muhammad Questions Matchmaking Strategy
Muhammad believes that rising contender Michael Morales has earned a title shot against Makhachev. However, he says Islam’s team appears to be pushing for a fight with Usman instead.
“I think Michael Morales, for sure, has earned it. But we see the seeds planted. We see Islam planted the seeds of Usman should be the next guy. I mean, obviously they have the same manager,” Muhammad stated.
Both Makhachev and Usman are represented by Ali Abdelaziz, the CEO of Dominance MMA Management. Muhammad suggests this shared management relationship plays a role in the matchmaking discussion.
Muhammad argues that Usman would actually be an easier opponent for Makhachev compared to Morales. He points to Usman’s recent inactivity as a key factor in his assessment.
“Do I think Usman is an easier matchup for him. Of course, the guys fought one time in three years,” Muhammad explained. Usman’s limited activity in recent years has raised questions about his readiness for a championship bout.
Muhammad Praises Makhachev Despite Criticism
Despite his criticism of the potential matchmaking, Muhammad made clear he respects Makhachev’s abilities. Muhammad and Makhachev are training partners and friends, which adds weight to his observations.
Muhammad calls Makhachev the true successor to retired champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Khabib serves as Islam’s mentor and has helped guide his career to the top of the lightweight division.
“Islam is continuing Khabib’s legacy. Everybody thought Khabib could do this; Khabib would be there. Now Islam is doing this. He’s continuing it, and he’s going with it,” Muhammad said.
Belal Muhammed said Islam Makhachev looking for an easier matchup by calling out Kamaru Usman:

Muhammad added that Makhachev’s dominance has been undeniable throughout his title reign. “He’s so good you can’t be mad at it. You’ve got to give him his props. He’s been dominating everyone. He’s definitely one of the best to ever do it,” he stated.
The debate over Makhachev’s next opponent continues as the UFC plans its upcoming fight cards. Cejudo’s analysis contrasts with Muhammad’s view that Usman would be an easier fight for the champion.
Makhachev currently holds the UFC lightweight title and has defended it multiple times. His next opponent remains unconfirmed as discussions continue behind the scenes.
