WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis reportedly turned himself in to police on Tuesday after being charged with “simple battery/domestic violence” stemming from a viral video appearing to show Davis grab a former girlfriend and mother of his child.

The video, which has amassed over 7.3 million views on Twitter alone, appears to show Davis and several others enter a venue where Davis’ ex-girlfriend was seated. Davis then purportedly grabs her around her neck area, visibly exchanging words with her as he leads her out of the venue.

In an Instagram story posted after receiving backlash for the incident, Davis wrote, “I never once hit her, yea I was aggressive and told her come on… that’s the mother of my child I would never hurt her other than that happy New Years.. January was trash.”

Davis’ Instagram account now appears to have been deactivated, with his profile showing 0 total posts.

According to CBS4, Davis turned himself in to Coral Gables police and was charged with simple battery domestic violence. He was then transferred to Turner Guilford Correctional Center.

In a statement released on Twitter, the Coral Gables Police Department noted that an investigation was ongoing following “being notified through social media and the victim.”

Coral Gables PD also reiterated that Davis voluntarily turned himself in three days after the alleged battery incident.

In December, Davis captured the WBA lightweight title with an emphatic twelfth-round TKO of former WBA and IBF champion Yuriorkis Gamboa.

Davis (23-0, 22 KOs), 25, is the protege of his promoter, all-time great Floyd Mayweather, Jr. He is widely considered to be one of boxing’s top young stars, and a bout between Davis and consensus pound-for-pound talent Vasily Lomachenko has been the subject of the boxing community’s wishes for some time.
