Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez 2 is ‘impossible’ according to Oscar De La Hoya

Floyd Mayweather Jr. (R) hits Canelo Alvarez in the fifth round of their WBC/WBA 154-pound title fight

Don’t expect to see a Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez rematch.

Mayweather is expected to come out of retirement again for a “spectacular event” in collaboration with UFC president Dana White.

Many have speculated as to whether it could be rematch with Conor McGregor. One other theory is that it could be a rematch with Manny Pacquiao, only promoted by Zuffa Boxing this time.

But one rematch that would also intrigue mainstream media is one with Alvarez. The duo notably fought back in 2013 when Alvarez was undefeated and just 22 years of age.

In the end, he was outclassed by Mayweather who went on to win a majority decision. That setback made Alvarez a better boxer as he has since gone on to become a four-weight world champion.

His most recent outing saw him knock out Sergey Kovalev to win the WBO light heavyweight title. Despite his size disadvantage at 175 pounds, the Mexican was still able to carry his power and come out on top.

But given that he is now fighting at the higher weight classes, Alvarez’s promoter Oscar de la Hoya just doesn’t see how a fight with Mayweather would be possible at this stage.

“I think the weight is just too much now,” De La Hoya told TMZ. “Canelo can’t make 154. He fought at 175. It’s impossible.

“I don’t know what weight class they would do it in. Unless Floyd goes up to 168.”

Mayweather hasn’t competed above 154 pounds and in reality, is unlikely to box a much more experienced and polished Alvarez.

But if “Money” truly was open to a rematch, it’s hard to see Alvarez not making the weight cut to face him.

“Anytime he’s ready, I’m ready,’’ Alvarez said of a Mayweather rematch back in November 2018. “If the day comes that he wants to come out of retirement for it, I’m a different fighter, I’m more mature, I’m a great, A-level fighter now and it would be a great opportunity.

“I’ve always had that little itch for (a rematch) since way back, and now I’m more experienced and more mature. It’s a fight that maybe will happen and will be a great experience.”
