Cain Velasquez plans on helping Daniel Cormier prepare for Stipe Miocic trilogy

If a trilogy fight between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier does get booked, expect Cain Velasquez to help the latter prepare for it.

Cormier lost his heavyweight title to Miocic at UFC 241 last month after getting knocked out in the fourth round. Many speculated that Cormier would retire from the sport following the loss, especially with him stating afterward that he needed time to think about his future.

However, that doesn’t seem to be the case. UFC president Dana White recently confirmed that a trilogy fight is on the cards.

“Stipe is recovering from that fight,” White recently told Barstool Sports. “He’s got some bumps and bangs from that fight. We’re waiting for him to heal and then yeah, we’re going to do the trilogy.”

Velasquez—who is currently enjoying a spell in the professional wrestling world—wasn’t aware of the news. But he believes Cormier is more than capable of regaining the heavyweight title.

“That’s awesome. I didn’t know that, this is the first time I’m hearing that,” Velasquez said at a recent media scrum (via MMA Junkie). “[What I know is] just that Daniel does want that trilogy match. He definitely deserves it.

“I believe he’ll go out and win for sure. He has all the tools to do that. I truly believe if he wants it that bad enough, he’ll go out and be a champ again at heavyweight.”

Velasquez was unable to help Cormier prepare for the rematch last month. However, he plans on doing it this time, especially as the timing works much better.

“Hell yeah, I will,” Velasquez added. “Now that I’m obviously a little more healthy, the time is a little better for his fight than the last one. So yes, I’ll be in there helping him. I think it’s great that he’s doing this so I’m happy for him.”

There is no word on when a Miocic vs. Cormier trilogy fight could happen, but early 2020 looks like a good estimate.
