Dana White open to Amanda Nunes vs. Claressa Shields, discusses Cris Cyborg rematch

    Abhinav KiniBy Abhinav KiniJuly 22, 2019Updated:July 22, 2019No Comments3 Mins Read
Amanda Nunes of Brazil walks onto the stage and up to the scale during the UFC weigh-in at the Park Theater on July 7, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

UFC president Dana White is down to see a super fight between two-weight champion Amanda Nunes and undefeated boxing star Claressa Shields.

Following her win over Holly Holm at UFC 239 earlier this month, Nunes further cemented herself as the greatest female fighter of all time.

She has a solid claim to it as well with dominant finishes over Miesha Tate, Ronda Rousey, Cris Cyborg and now Holm. Not to mention, she also holds the featherweight title, being the only woman in UFC history to have held two different belts.

Shields, however, recently took issue with the claim that Nunes was the greatest female fighter ever. The 24-year-old is 9-0 in boxing and currently reigns as the undisputed middleweight champion of the world, holding all four of the major boxing organization titles. In addition, she is a two-time gold medallist in the Olympics.

“They are calling her the greatest MMA fighter of all time, not the greatest fighter,” Shields recently told TMZ. “I’m the GWOAT, the greatest woman fighter of all time. I’ve always been. Amanda Nunes… she ain’t been to the Olympics two times. I’ve been to the top of the world two times.”

While Shields would later add that she respects Nunes and would lose in an MMA fight, she also claimed that in a boxing match, the “Lioness” would go to sleep. So what were White’s thoughts on a potential boxing super fight?

“It’d be an interesting fight,” White responded when asked by TMZ. “Of course [Nunes has a chance in boxing]. She hits like a truck. Anybody that punches the way she does, has a chance in a fight.

“Amanda Nunes has things that she needs to do here [in the UFC] first, but I’m not opposed to it. …Maybe Claressa comes over here and fights in MMA,” he later joked.

    Nunes vs. Cyborg II?

One of the things Nunes seemingly has left to do in the UFC is run things back with Cyborg. However, White believes it’s a fight that the former featherweight champion doesn’t want.

“She [Nunes] wants the Cyborg fight,” White added. “I don’t think Cyborg wants that fight. I think it’s pretty obvious why she wouldn’t want that fight. It’s not a good fight for her. It’s a bad fight for her.

“I don’t think she’s afraid. I mean, she’s been fighting for a long time. But I think that she’s at the point where she’s afraid to lose again. Losing again isn’t something she’s interested in.”

White has repeatedly mentioned how Cyborg doesn’t want the rematch in the past. However, that seems to be contradictory, especially given how Cyborg has been openly campaigning for a rematch for months. She even recently called out White’s claims leading up to UFC 239:

If we are suppose to be business partners and building trust so that we can work towards a new deal Let’s stop the lies. @danawhite @paradigmsm #CyborgNation @ufc @espnmma @Amanda_Leoa pic.twitter.com/u9B2BOKXwO
